Hope this can be of benefit to PH London visitors or residents alike!

There is a taxi service in London which works using a free App called Uber. You will need to download Uber from the App store. It's quite smart, you can choose from three levels of car from a cheap and basic Prius all the way up to a swanky S-Class, each with their own price quoted for your journey.

When you sign up, if you use the Uber Promo Code "uberchristmas" you will get £10 credited to your account totally free. That's enough to cover most trips around London! Please feel free to share.

I am not affiliated with the company at all, but I do get credits for using the code. Hopefully it will save some PHer's some money!

Are you not going to offer an uber equivalent in the 6 series?

No thanks, I spoke to one of their drivers last week who thought it was hilarious that during one of their "surge charging" periods he charged a customer £48 from Angel to Kings Cross (including a 10 minute wait)

I'm pretty lazy but that's walking distance!

There are PLENTY of other companies in London who aren't JUST app providers!

For the interest of future readers I have found uber to be fairer in general than many black cabs. The amount of cabs I get in (I normally have a suitcase with me) and the drivers starts to take long ways round thinking I'm a tourist. I just haven't had that with Uber and the vehicles/rides are much more comfortable than a black cab.

You definitely can't compare the awful ride of a black cab but Uber also calculate fare by a combination of time and distance so it is still open to abuse from the driver, as is the possibility of the driver taking advantage of not" finishing" the journey on his device when it has ACTUALLY finished in order to cash in on a few more minutes of time / money!

You ask a GOOD "regular" company for a quote and that's the price, Uber can't give a firm quote because they can't be sure of how long the time element of the journey will be, God forbid it should fall into Uber's dreaded "surge charge", so best not to compare against black cabs but compare prices with the best minicab companies (not just A.L either)

Ultimately the ONLY thing you get with Uber is the ease of use with the App, same cars, same drivers as the better companies, it really is the Emporer's New Clothes at the touch of a button!

Uber provide you with a fare estimate before you ride. This is based on app logic and live traffic at the time of journey. If the price is wildly different to your estimate Uber will (and have to me) re - credit you. They can track the driver to ensure they took the optimum route too and they do check the quality of thier drivers. It's a great thing to have an estimate you know to be fair before you get in a cab in an unfamiliar city. The driver knows this too and has no incentive to try and square you off. As for jacking up prices, for example when there are tube strikes, all taxis have been doing that for time immemorial.

As from Uber driver`s mouths - we can earn extra money by not completing jobs for a few minutes after the passenger has left the car!

As for ALL taxis jacking up prices during tube strikes? that`s not true, for one thing there is a difference between a "TAXI" and a "Private Hire" / "minicab", a Taxi has a meter which is set by Transport For London and does not have any other setting other than day or night, Private Hire car prices are set by the individual company who the driver works for, short sighted companies will jack prices up, reputable ones don`t!

I use Uber regularly if I am working late and want to hurry home to see the kids...if I order the middle ranking car it's cheaper than a black cab definitely.

I don't think you can compare black cab prices with ANY Private Hire company's prices, for me Black Cabs are for spur of the moment / emergencies only!

Noboby wants to pay approximately £75 from Central London to Heathrow!
