Still doesn't actually address the pollution issue as affected vehicles simply pay (rather than be banned) - but now with the threat of extending the charge zones times in to the evenings and Saturdays - guess what the outcome will be? - even more 'exempt' Prius Ubercabs !

Slightly concerned about the thoughts of extending the zone to the north/south circular in 2012. Currently it's a very small area that's covered and so for most people easy to avoid if they don't want to pay with many different routes to go around the area. If it's extended our to the north/south circular that's a much bigger area and an awful lot of people who would be forced on to the north/south circular in order to get around it. Can't help thinking that will have a massive negative impact on air quality long that route!

I live inside the proposed extension so have just bought a Euro 5 petrol. 5.5 V8, mind. Covers all the bases.

Thanks for the link. Stage 3b is the biggie, for the extension to the N/S circular area. Expected Autumn this year.

I bet the bosses at the car firms are rubbing their hands in glee.

Yes it does seem Khan wants us to be driving in a 6 litre V12 from 2006smile

What is scary is that hardly anyone I have spoken to is aware of this.

Very concerned but most people just think this affects diesel cars as some of the ill informed posts on here show, I get burnt twice if the extended ULEZ comes into force as my 2009 CLK320cdi & 2003 CLK55 both fall foul of the new Tax which is just a joke.

Oddly enough I was actually planning to buy my first ever diesel in January. I actually would have done so had I not had to go to Cornwall for NY. The car in question was sold the day before I returned.

A few days later I had to get some things sorted on my existing car and I mentioned the fact that I'd missed out on a diesel to the fellah who looks after mine and he said "Whoa....".

First time I'd heard anything about it TBH.

I feel like I dodged a bullet there.

It's going to happen, hence why I had no choice but to sell my CLK 320 before the market gets flooded, it sold easily for asking price and I have sellers remorse, however it was the right thing to do.

The email from TFL came through yesterday - making the October thing more real.

Still, never had a diesel and now certainly never will.

With more planes due to affect the air pollution levels (Heathrow & City airport expansion) will rise but I'm happy for the both expansions to go ahead but they should be taxed in the same way the motorist is.

Also with all these new builds going up why aren't the companies building these apartments being forced to invest in the local infrastructure which would help people not drive making them give floor space for a Dental/Doctors/Creche/local shop as well as making them contribute to the local road network & if they don't want to do this then they don't get planning permission.

He's also failed to take into account that scientists have already said that the mining of Lithium is now causing environmental damage to waterways & therefore humans already. I'm guessing because this doesn't affect those people living in the city & Surrey that are making all the noise about air pollution only actually care about their environment rather than THE environment.

As you rightly point out air pollution comes from more than just cars, he's also ignoring a report that stated that the loss of 1/3 of carriageway space since the Mayors & TFL became the people that shaped London's roads is a big contribution to the traffic levels we have now.

One of the most damning parts was that they were saying speed humps are a major cause due to them being outside people's homes all of which is conducive to adding to air pollution not reducing it along with 20mph limits which again add to air pollution.

I've saved the best for last the reports say that if everyone in London get's in an EV London alone will have to get two new Nuclear Power stations just to charge those cars, hardly a great for the environment wink

Also he says he'll ban ICE cars by whenever but he won't ban hybrids which will have petrol/diesel engines. biglaugh

I get the petrol/hybrid thing. I like drifting across London in the back of a Prius when it's on it's batteries. And when the engine does kick in it's fairly unobtrusive. And as it's small & petrol it's relatively good in the city.

I can't get my head around the original MB diesel (!) hybrid. All nice and calm until the engine kicks in and BLAM! CHUGGA CHUGGA CHUGGA CHUGGA BLAM! BLAM! CHUGGA CHUGGA. BLAM! CHUGGA. BLAM! BLAM!

WTF?

(and yes I do know the engine, had one in a loaner for three long and very vibrating weeks).

+ all the NOx issues.

Me? I'd have a Lexus 450Gh. Leccie in town. Tuneful V6 on the open road. No need for any nuclear plants. Win win. Well apart from the Lithium mines........

Consultation for extension to zone 3 ,24/7 meaning £4200 a year if you drive every day. Very surprised there is no more noise on this?

I'm also very surprised there's not more noise about this.

A couple of months ago there was a news feature on BBC that stated that the RAC were concerned the government were not taking more of a role in it.

I asked my MP about it, it went to the DfT's office (Chris Grayling) and the under secretary responded just the other day with a nice letter setting out the facts of the scheme (i.e. things that we all know already), stating how bad London's pollution is and how it needs addressing, and how the issue is devolved to the Mayor and TfL.

So in a nutshell, you have a problem, take it up with TfL (where your objection will fall on deaf ears).

By my reckoning, if you drive a perfectly serviceable but non Euro-6 compliant car (that means one that is older than MY 2015, by and large) and need to drive in the ULEZ on a daily basis, your choice from April 8 2019 (or whatever date the expanded zone takes effect) is:

1. Pay £2 per day until 2022, when you can pay £20 per day

2. Buy a used, compliant car - in 2019, this will be a car not more than 4 years old - what, £10k minimum

3. Lease a new car from April 2019 - if this is new to you, that's £200 per month plus the up front, to own nothing (let's not go there, this is just how I see it)

4. Rely on public transport

5. Move out of London

To me it seems pretty clear the the ULEZ will happen, the expended ULEZ to the N/S Circular roads will happen and from there, a creeping expansion to the entire area under the GLA's control.

Getting close to my area. Guess there's no point complaining as "consultations" mean fk all in my experience.

Any cars that are exempt but actually quite polluting? biggrin

Definitely respond to the consultation. If we all say 'what's the point?', we get what we deserve
