Hello PHs,

Stumbled across this forum and noticed quite a few members live in the Wapping area. I'm thinking about moving to the area and was hoping to get your views on what it is like.

I've been looking at St. Katherine dock and the developments along Wapping High Street by the river. How is this area in terms of safety, is there much anti-social behavior from youths etc. ? There seem to be a few council estates further back from the river so a little concerned.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Gene

Lived in one the warehouse conversions on Wapping high st for the past 2 years, never had a moments trouble in terms of 'youths' etc. Think once you wander beyond the High St or St Katherine Docks it all starts to go downhill a bit rapidly.

You do see a huge amount of smashed car windows however, so unless you have secure underground / off street parking, I would be very wary of leaving any sort of decent car parked on the road.

As far as an area goes, I absolutely love it. Moved from Mortlake in SW London, and wish I had made the move much earlier. Close enough to the City / Canary Wharf that you can walk to work, yet very quiet and peaceful from a residential point of view (Unless a certain 6ltr orange Diablo is out and about smile). Good restaurants / pubs along the High St as well.

I've lived in Wapping on and off for about 5 years now, near to the station, and I love the area. I've never really noticed any anti-social behaviour from the groups of kids who hang around sometimes, although like Eric says there are lots of cars broken into, so if you do park on the street don't ever leave anything of value in the car.

It's a great location (good bus connections to Canary Wharf and the City, or a 30 minute walk), and there are some nice pubs and restuarants in the area, plus a 24 hour mini cab firm, post office, cash machine etc... and if you do want a bit more night life you're only a few minutes in a cab from the West End.

Agree with the comments so far - wavey Ed.

Wapping is actually quite villagey - it's surprising how often you bump into people you know in Waitrose or in one of the restaurants.

If you move here, just don't get led astray by the 'Wapping Crew'. wink

Many thanks for the replies, much appreciated. My main concern was about anti-social behaviour given the nearby estates, but from the comments it sounds like there isn't much to be worry about.

Just need to decide between St Kath docks and the High St. then I'll be set.

Thanks!

Makre sure you have a gander down Narrow St in Limehouse as well.

I've been there foe four years, nice pubs, good restaurants. A few knobheads about but where is that not the case....

I used to live in that part of the world too...
The Wapping Crew are your biggest health worry... no, seriously! wink

Both great areas and as said, good village feel without being far from anywhere.
Wapping seems to have better pubs / restaurants, but Limehouse has better transport links now the East London line is closed...

..I don't think I even get on the podium in terms of Wapping's loudest car competition!!!! ....Ed's Tuscan, Bebs's 360 and Phil's GT all have louder exhausts than mine!!!

But anyway, another general positive vote from me as well ...been here since the early 90's!

We've been in Wapping for six years, with one of our cars left on the street (Wapping Wall) all the time. Only had one alloy nicked and one smashed window which is probably around par for anywhere except the Hebrides. The crew forgot to mention that there's also two infants schools, a sports centre, a few celebrities and loads of top motors to look at.

Yeah, what are they doing in Wapping? The schools will only attract kids and we don't want that smile. Knock them flat and put some more eateries in, although with the BBQ place being shut now (we noticed as we drove past tonight) they may not do very well frown

The BBQ rib shack place has closed??? Nooooooo.... the ribs there were incredible.. possibly my favourite Friday night takeaway place in the area.

Someone answered the phone on Saturday night, and said something about it being closed for the next couple of weeks, so it might be OK although it doesn't look too promising frown

There's a two page letter stuck in the window that's worth reading. Still do delivery but I just liked the atmosphere in the place. Looks like a landlord dispute, so I doubt it'll open up there again....

Beeston has tried to order over the phone a few times, but they keep telling him they're shut. Maybe it's just him they don't deliver to - they probably don't have a big enough bike hehe

He said he has a huge smokehouse, think somewhere near City Airport?? So hopefully still keeping the delivery side running, for the time being at least....

Thanks again for all the feedback. I was looking around Wapping again over the weekend, really is a nice area. Just need to find the right flat now. Also noticed quite a few restaurants in SK Docks, a Cafe Rouge and a few others.

Are you looking to rent or buy, and what kind of thing are you looking for? It's just that I might know of something coming up soon. wink
