Some of you will have lived in the Docklands and I was wondering if you could offer any advice as I'm considering moving there.

I'm currently commuting into the City and Canary Wharf from St Albans a few days a week and its wrecking my head. Aside from the ridiculous cost, the hours wasted are causing me a lot of grief.

A cursory view of Rightmove shows that nice looking flats can be had for around 800pcm in the Docklands area. Travel time from there to Fenchurch Street wouldn't be too bad at all if I'm within walking distance of a DLR station. Finding a flat with a parking space and reasonable room for my mountain bike, mountain of books and so on would be ideal.

I was wondering what additional bills I'd be in for in addition to the 800pcm - I was figuring on council tax of at least £100, are electricity and water normally extra charges for the tennant too? Any other charges?

And finally, whats it like to live in? Acres of concrete and glass? No shops nearby?

Are you sure it's £800pcm not per week!wink. Seriously, if you're finding flats for that price they are more than likely in Poplar or in the Mudchute area, not sure I'd like to live in either of those. Docklands is big place and varies considerably. I think you'll need to have a look around first then check out the prices.

Yup probably do need to get in touch with some agents and look at a few places. I know the prices vary wildly, the 800 quid range doesn't get you the fancy modern glass apartment building with concierge, but rather this sort of thing:

Royal Docks is ok.. slightly out of the way, as it's down by city airport you also get a fair amount of plane noise during the day..

Canning town I'd say not.. it's got somewhat of a reputation.

What sort of thing are we talking about? Groups of chavs hassling people in the streets? Smash and grab attacks? Burglary? All of the above?

That's a start. Didn't you say you had a car? Past tense is right.

And the first link just look at the picture outside. A van and a Ford Orion in the carpark. Class.

Go to both places on a rainy day, and at night. I dont even like driving through Canning Town at night.

I am not an expert on the area, but 800 pcm sounds a tad optimistic.

council tax : £100 ish
Water : £25 ish
Gas : £20 ish
Electricity : £20 ish
phone/net : £20 ish
tv license : £10 ish

maybe just call it £200 quid (maybe a bit on the high side ?)

I live on the Isle of Dogs and to get a flat to yourself with a parking place, as the others where saying is a tad optimistic for £800. For that sort of money you are better off getting a house share. For a decent house share with parking space/ garage etc you are probably looking at 600 plus bills.

The isle of dogs is an ok place to live. I like it becasue its quiet, reasonable amount of space and its easy to get out of London from there. Greenwich is also quite close by and thats a ncie place to go of an evening.

You can Add Woolwich to that, well i actually mean Royal Arsenal, i'm just about to rent out a 1 bed for £900 pcm, its a great site, has got the Thames clipper 5 minutes from the front door which is about 45 mins to Tower of London, which is a 5 minute walk from Fenchurch street.

At the moment its looking like the 22nd floor of the Aragon Tower (Greenland Pier) but it could also just as likely end up in the Wharf.
