Its a great run out i like to do as much as i can as its so close.
Been up in most my cars clio v6 being the most challenging.

Middleton to brough is also epic if you choose to go up from penrith up to alston then across to middleston and back to 66 towards brough.. As said just watch out for bikers on wrong side of road round blind corners who oftern lean over to your side of the road so you cant really use the full width of your side of the road to fear of a head on.

Also a few sheep get out and roam about

Omega and MX-5 on the moors by shampoo efficient, on Flickr

The B6277, about a week ago. One of those cars is in the middle of throwing a hissy fit... and not the one you'd expect wink

Both smashing cars for taking up there. The MX5 nimble enough to attack every apex where the line of sight is good enough. The Omega with it's torquey punch and composed ride to really make pace at the bottom ends of the pass where the road is straighter and the tarmac somewhat rougher!

I'm heading over Hartside on my way over to Whitehaven tomorrow late afternoon / early evening, can't wait for the run. And the run backon Friday, and back again 2 days later :-)

Have yet to get to Melmerby in any vehicle without cooking the brakes going down the hill lol.

Just been today. It's a bit wet but that just means less bikers to get in the way wink

You're relying too heavily on them then. A bit less speed on the straights carrying a bit more through corners and use engine braking and you should be able to be fairly light on the brakes for the majority of the run down.

Or just find some bigger discs.

Managed it today without any fade, but it was wet; I don't generally carry too much speed down the straights, just leave my braking a bit late. yellowstuff pads would probably be enough to avoid it, can't get bigger discs without bigger wheels, which would then rub on inner arches on lock.

Yes, I've never cooked brakes on that route before. Maybe had a little bit of brake fade, but that's it, in a variety of cars. I suppose if you've got something fast and heavy and you're barrelling down straights and braking hard into corners you could quickly cook your brakes. As mentioned above, try setting the car up more for the corner, getting the gear right and driving the car through the corner. Takes a lot of stress off the brakes.

Unless of course, you are in something that is just too big for the pass, then carry on as normal with some bigger brakes! biggrin

I've been thinking of buying a cheapy MX5 or MR2 next year for recreational purposes. Hartside Pass would be fun in either though I am leaning towards a mk3 MR2. I'll use my A8 for my leisurely holidays to the Lakes and Scotland. That would be fun to open up on the pass!

That's your problem. If you set the car up well you'll barely need to touch your brakes more than lightly in a straight line.
