I passed some new speed detectors on Conniscliffe road today which must have only recently gone up. They are a flat panel roughly a foot square, fastened to a lamp post and display your speed as you pass (43 in big red digits).

Are these a friendly sort of reminder or do they revenue raise aswell?

I think they are a reminder. We have several round our way as an alternative to speedbumps.

The council are monitoring their effectiveness, so we might end up with even more bloody bumps.

Haven't seen many of those in this area at all, the only ones I've seen before were around Newcastle.

How far up Coniscliffe Road are they? Might have a drive past and have a play

I think there are two on the way out towards Gainford and one as you come back in, but nearer the town.

So hopefully no nip in the post then

I think they only light up if you're breaking the limit so if you haven't seen them you're not going fast enough.

Yeah they put one up in Washington yesterday. Scared the sh*t out of me on the way home last night when it started flashing at me!

These things move around the town. They must be battery powered as sometimes they don't work and shortly after they are gone. My Snooper radar detector picks them up too. They seem to work as people tend to slow down.

Another use I have found for them is to drive at just above 30, when the sign indicates your speed, floor it and see what you can get up to in the small detectable distance available....voila... a council supplied acceleration meter !!!
