I'm going to look around the areas you guys have suggested; look fairly decentish on google streetview. And now the important stuff; where's the decent places to go out in Newcastle on a Fri/sat?

Cheers

Jesmond - good quality, student'y, decent class night out.
Quayside - trendy, pricey, stagg-do-y, but otherwise good fun
Central Station - good choice of bars, lively, mix of classes
Haymarket - similar to central station but a few more 'traditional' watering holes.

ps I'm off work today, if you're checkling out areas, and you're interested in a 10 minute chat let me know, can meet you if needed. Born and bred in the area and have lived all over, from decent, to not so decent areas.

Also check out sandyford, its a stones throw from Jesmond but a fair bit cheeper.

I'd agree with that and also throw in Gosforth or Ilford Road areas. Both of which are a little quieter than Jesmond in terms of Students etc but are still very nice and a little cheaper. I've always thought that the trouble with Jesmond is that you could spend a fortune on a beautiful house only to find that you're living nextdoor to six nocturnal students. That said, there are quieter parts of Jesmond that are worth looking at.

Cheers SeanyD,

Unfortunately I'm not going to get there untill 8.30pm tonight, but thanks for the offer. Will probably just get a feel for the city tommorow.

Thanks

Don't rule out living in Hexham itself. I live 15 minutes out of Hexham in the middle of nowhere and it's a beautiful part of the country. Hexham to Newcastle is about 30 - 40mins, and you have the added bonus of some of the best driving roads on your doorstep. Hexham town centre has everything you need, with the advantage of having no chavs. You see pleanty of Astons, Lotus and TVRs and the people are really friendly.

If you're driving out that way, take in the B6318 Military road - runs alongside the A69, and if you've got a bit of time on your hands drive up Hartside Pass to Alston- probably the best road in the area.

Regarding Fenham, I lived there for 6 years, and it's not as bad as people say, but there are some dodgy bits- stay on the right side of West road, and away from Benwell/ Elswick if you have a nice car.

All the best, you'll love it up here wherever you end up.

Holy thread resurrection....

I'm about to make the same move, from Glasgow to Newcastle in January. I quite fancy an apartment in the city centre as I love the city life, what is the Quayside like to live in? There seem to be some nice places with parking, which is key.

Are there any other areas I should be looking at?

I've lived on the quayside for the last few months. If you are used to the hustle and bustle of city living then it's a nice place to be. It's not always tranquil, but the view is great and you are within spitting distance of some of the finest pubs in all of Newcastle.

I'm just about to move away though as my garage keeps being broken into.
