Evening all,

Any suggestions for a decent curry house near Alvaston, Derby?

There's only so many average Indian dinners I can face... so I don't suppose you use an above-average curry house near Alvaston that we can adopt as our new haunt, thereby (cleverly, yes ) helping us eliminate a succession of sub-par dinners for us before finding our pearl...?

G'wan!

Not been to Mamas Masala at Spondon but that isn't too far and the Tandooris Nights at Shardlow is on a bus route. Spices is in Alvaston itself but gets mixed reviews.

ETA - Viceroy, Shalimar and Anoki are all in town in close proximity as well and are top places. We now like the Cinnammon Tree in Mickleover but a bit far out. For a country setting, there is also Nadee at Findern and I will let you know when we have been later this month!

In Allenton there's a Carribean takeaway called roots. Not Indian, but definately spicey, and different.

Anoki is good, though the last time I was there the bill for two was £130.

The cinnamon tree is an easy walk for me, really should try it sometime.

Had a wonderful takeaway from a place in Littleover last weekend, but have no idea what the place is called.

The takeaway was "basmati"

And the Anoki bill wasn't helped by drinking Bolinger instead of Cobra

eta, the main course portion size from Basmati is somewhat larger than usual, we ended up eating as much for lunch the following day from the leftovers. Maybe only order three or four mains for five.

They do a nice takeaway £20 meal deal offer at Anoki on the A38 if you collect:

The CT is good for the new dish dash menu - 3 courses for £12.95 certain nights/times and their draught Cobra is lick

+1 for The Cinnamon Tree. I find I don't go anywhere else for Indian food these days... Had a lovely meal for the Queen's jubilee / my birthday on Tuesday with the Dish-Dash deal.

The top 2 IMO are Tandoori Nights and the Shalimar.

But both are geting pricey for sit down meals.

Last Sat eat in for two £80 +taxis from Alvaston £100 ( Shalimar)
Takeaway same meal with a bottle of wine £20 less beer.

I won't eat in in them again but the food is very good but i can't justify the differences.

Spices good one week bad the next it's in a bad place with a bad decor, and dis organised with the Ala Carte people are walking around you whilst your being served by the waiter (not Ala Carte) most odd set up.

We were going to try Cinammon tree this evening, but an afternoon of drinking made a 10 minute taxi ride more appealing prospect than 25 minutes, so Cinammon was vetoed on distance.

We went to Anoki instead - absolutely loved the decor and the feel of the place. Music a bit too loud, but other than that, brilliantly engaging restaurant!

OK value for money, too... just under £150 for 5 with drinks, so pretty decent value, as dinner was lick :lick. That dark red tamarind sauce... never had it before; it's like crack! Love it!

Cheers for all the recommendations; going to give them all a go!

Okra in Duffield is my absolute favourite, proper restaurant not a late night brawl, and they open early so the kids love it!

Basmati, on Hollybrook Way, Littleover.

Excellent food, and very friendly staff.

Well, Anoki has become my new favourite, but I think we're going to sample pretty much anything that's on London Road in Derby... The Viceroy (I think it's called?) next.

On the list are Shalimar, Tandoori Nights and the Cinnamon Tree I think!

Cheers for all the suggestions thumbup

I goto the tandori nights on the a46 near me, having been to india the food they do is very good. I would assume the one at shardlow would be like wise. Also been to a nice one at duffield although I can't remember the name.
