Right were to start... I'm a developer and came from Belper originally now live near Ashbourne. I would definitely go to the West of the A6 to avoid the mining towns*, you still have access to the M1 and if you go lower the A50 and hence M6 as well. You need to decide if you prefer the Peaks or Dales. There are lots of nice villages between Bakewell and Matlock but it will take you longer to travel. Belper is a very good call along with Duffield Ashbourne is nice but takes a few minutes longer to get to Derby. nice villages Kniveton, bradbourne etc and loads more. Personally Matlock Bath can be a nightmare in the Summer with tourists. As can Winster, Hope Casteleton etc.

Have a break and go for a drive stay to the West of A6/M1 would be my suggestion and decide whether you prefer the Peaks(limestone walls bleaker etc ) or the Dales (hedges rolling countryside)

  • Not all mining towns are bad but some are abit weird!

Hi Alec,
I live in Matlock; have done for all my life (many years now). Generally speaking Fish has got it right - west of the A6 is preferable. Matlock is a reasonably good place to live; there are some good/excellent pubs, bars and restaurants, and we have an abundance of excellent curry houses (don't know why) - but there are some less good places too. Plenty of sport and outdoor stuff to do, but we are a little thin on culture - there are a couple of comedy clubs, a few live music venues, etc. The guys are right; it can get horrendously busy at weekends. We’re blighted by coffin dodgers all year round and bikes in the summer, however, don't let that put you off - even on the busiest days I can walk from home and be in isolation within 2 minutes, you've just got to know where to go. Hooning potential is also good – just make sure the location and time are right and it’s as good as anywhere else in the UK. (I’d bet a month’s wages that Fish takes his CSR 260 on the Longcliffe road and loves every minute of it!) Traffic can be avoided by using the rat runs. It may be a small point, but we are the last stop on the train line to Derby which is very useful. Most people in town are pleasant enough, but there will be nights when you will honestly believe that a village idiot convention is in town…..
House prices are reasonable and certainly cheaper than Bakewell (which is THE worst place for bl**dy tourists) – have you also considered Wirksworth? That’s a nice little place.
Where will your job will be based?
Andy.

I live on the Hallfieldgate side of Shirland, right next to a couple of nice little B roads and a good 3 miles out of Alfreton, 5 miles from Matlock and 4 ish miles from Clay Cross. It's full of very old people mainly but I don't mind that and it's very quiet, again, I don't mind that.

Thank you all very much for that great information! We're now debating hiring a cottage up there for a week and doing some scouting about!

Jobs wise I'm not sure - but from various job sites there are a fair few within a 25mile radius for me, and the OH should be okay!

Just wondered if you made the move in the end? We are thinking of moving that way too but can't really find anything within budget!

Our search continues, we did a grand tour last Sunday and ruled out a few places such as Bonsal but we really liked Winster.

Kicked off the Mortgage application so just need to find a house now smile
