I like to know what are the best places to live in Derby (near best public schools). I will be using A38 everyday and will be relocating with family and kids.

We have friends in Heatherton, seems nice enough, and reasonably affluent. Dangerously close to a large estate despite occupants/estate agents calling it Heatherton Village. Mickleover is held in high regard, but I don't see the appeal.

Little Eaton is close to the A38 without being "in" Derby, definitely worth a look, as I think it lies within the coveted Ecclesbourne School catchment area. If a good school is a requisite, they seem to have a good reputation. Duffield is the village it's based in, so may be worth a look too. Allestree may also fall within catchment, so may be worth a look.

Chellaston used to have a good reputation, but to me it has been incorporated into Alvaston through some extensive development of brownfield. Only way is down in my humble opinion.

All of this needs to be taken with a healthy pinch of money though, as the Ecclesbourne effect definitely sends prices upwards a bit compared to neighbouring areas.

We don't live in Derby any more, but Belper to the North. Our school isn't so well thought of, but it is an area which has seen a large influx of families sick of living in the city, but can't quite afford to live in Duffield. Seems like quite a nice community spirit amongst the families we mix with.

Were moving to Allestree in July. Wife from Derby so she knows it well, but i don't. Our children are at nursery rather then school, but we do know what the good schools are. Happy to meet for a pint if you fancy it

Sorry to piggy back your thread but im in a similar position so guess it could help both of us.

Im from Northumberland but my misses lives near Ashbourne, we are also looking to buy in the Derby area.

Im currently adjusting myself to the price difference from northumberland to Derby/Notts area smile

Little Eaton and Mickleover are nice. Belpers lovely but maybe a bit far out of Derby. We've just moved to Belper for schools and a good area to bring our kids up in, from Sutton in Ashfield which wasn't so good!

Ha! I had the opposite when I moved down here from the Lake District, everywhere seemed really good value.

In Sutton in Ashfield we could have bought a 4 bed detached with double garage, in Belper (12 mile away) the same money bought us a 3 bed semi with detached garage. Location location location though!

Hmm
If you are going to use the A38 every day, why not go a bit out of Derby? Matlock for example is lovely. Belper has already been mentioned, both have some good schools.

Might just be worth saying which way you are going on the A38 each day as if North, then Allestree/Little Eaton/Belper/A6 corridor may be slightly better than if you want to go South, in which case Mickleover/Littleover/Heatherton may be better. Also, is it a Derby superb or a fringe town you are looking at?

So Denby then? Most of the options mentioned will work then - just a case of suburb v town, 5 minute v 20 minute commute and believe it or not, type of house you are looking for i.e. Allestree won't have loads of 2 bedroom semis whereas other places may (and vice versa).

There are a load of brand new houses being built next to Deb, 5 mins to a38 in either direction.

I Went to Denstone college (15 years ago) and the private schools are good in there own rights for different points but Repton is a good all rounder school, Denstone was good for sports. Abbotsholme is solid, abbots bromley is rated well, but girls till 6 form, itis small and in a very nice village

My brother sends his kids to Trent college which i think is fine but is quite big and open, but sports orientated.

i would look at villages and can give you some pointers spent my whole life near uttoxeter and around.

10 m ins off a38 and a50 offers a lot of options.

Ive been looking around Tutbury, Rolleston on Dove area. Spend a couple of years living in Tutbury for work so I know the area well. Always seemed a friendly area.
