We a thinking of moving from Bucks to one of the villages in the Southern Peak District and would like some advice regarding what its really like living there in the winter.

Over the years we have visited many times during good weather when the scenery is stunning, but we are wondering how cold and bleak it can be during the winter and in inclement weather.

We want to move to or close to a small village or hamlet, so we are close to a community and currently we are thinking of North West of Ashbourne around the Wetton, Grindon, Onecote area.
This is an area we are not familiar with, but are hoping to get up there this weekend to see what it is like.

I am Bucks born and bread, so this is a very big move for me and I don't want to get it wrong.

Any advice guidance or views and experiences of any one who has moved into the area from the South would be appreciated.

Also and very important how TVR friendly are the roads and lanes, especially in winter?

Many thanks,
A Softie Southerner

I have lived in or close to the Peak District since I was born. I am not familiar with that area but I have experienced a few harsh Winters here... If you are worried about the weather I would definitely avoid the Buxton area, it has been known to snow there in Summer - no joke!

The bad weather can be very localised though, for example we can have several inches of snow where I work at the top of a hill. At the bottom however there might not be any! Maybe you could find somewhere near a bus route if you are worried about the roads as they are generally kept clear when the snow does come!

It is difficult to advise you more than that really as every Winter is so different. Last Winter we got no snow at all but the year before we had bad snow and ice for a whole month!

Good luck with the move anyway, as you said the scenery is lovely and the people are generally very friendly. There are also some cracking roads around here (along with some that are literally 'cracking'!)

I live just south of Ashbourne and always have a 4 x 4 on the drive, but probably only need it for a few days each winter if I'm honest. Alstonfield is a nice village with a very good pub, worth a visit next time you're up, but it will be a very different life to the one you're living now, especially in February!

They're not. Most people I know in the area have another car for winter. In summer you'll find the area heavenly for the TVR.
