Hi All

It looks like a new job is going to be moving me up to Leicester, by way of a weekly commute (I live in Surrey with the family). My current thinking is to rent an apartment in the centre of the city so that I can walk to work, walk to the gym, walk to restaurants/bars. I'd like to avoid the main student blocks, as I am a bit too old to join in those shenanigans these days, but I'm quite happy to do "inner city".

Can any locals share their knowledge on what the "right" parts of town are to live in, and any other tips about lifestyle choices in the area?

I have considered a small cottage outside of the city too, but I think that I want to avoid a driving commute unless it is really worth getting out of town...

Moved there from kent 9 years ago, just moved to derby. Like any city there are good and bad places. Stoneygate is very nice, as is clarendon park (the latter does have lots of students, though). both south/south east of city centre, and are about 10/15 min walk from railway station

Avoid the "west end" as its too studenty, and st matthews is not very nice at all. There are lots of new build flats in the very inner city, which have all the positives and negatives of inner city life.

Commuting in isnt too bad at all, unlike Nottingham and there is a canal which runs north/south through the city with a great towpath which I used to use for cycling to work. Some nice bars around the theatre, and around the west end too. Some of the latter are full of students, but thats not too bad, eh??

And London st pancras is just over 1 hour away by train. Even closer is mallory park. Donington, silverstone, rockingham are all an easy drive away.

Ditto Stoneygate or Clarendon Park - I'd avoid New Walk, tramps and druggies lurk around that area, not dangerous but not that nice either. You could consider moving further out towards Great Glen, Kibworth etc. commute as far as Clarendon park and then only a 10 minute walk to work

Thanks oddball.

It's always good to have some inside knowledge before I start talking to agents!

Thank you!

Is the Melton Mowbray direction the area to look at for nice villages then?

For pork pies or red Leicester maybe. Personally I prefer the villages up towards Derbyshire but that gets you well off a train route. Depending on how much money you have to spend between Loughborough and Leicester can be very nice off the train line, or more mixed on it.

I do happen to like porkies and cheese, but that's not really the point!

I am very keen to avoid having to motor in though, so it would be train or nothing if I live out of twon.

South Leicestershire is the place to be :-) or Rutland.

I try and keep away from the city.

multiculturalism does not work, the areas are very defined.

It's not white racism , these none white area don't get on with each other.

Pm me if you like, I live 7 miles south of the city.

Agree with you.

The majority of the villages going across from Lutterworth all the way to Uppingham are very nice indeed. I'm biased though as I live in one of them. biggrin

I'm a Londoner so living in the South of the county makes getting back 'home' to see family whether I drive or take the train is easy.

Leicester is a 20 minute drive from my house, the London Road is a bd for traffic but if you know your way around it's easily avoided.

I came to Leicestershire with work 16 years ago and only expected to be here a year or two. I'm very content here and I can't see myself moving away now to be honest.
