For many years have been coming up to Oakham and Stamford and really fancy moving here in the near future from Herts. Couple of places I've seen are Edith Weston and Manton right near the water but are there any other places worthy of thinking about preferably close to Rutland water? We don't need to be near schools or train links to London so no probs there just want a slower quieter pace of life with some decent views

Have you got kids - some villages like Braunston are very pretty but average age of 65+ so might not be that good for them to make new friends. Market Overton, Whissendine, Wymondham, Empingham and Exton are all nice and haven't lost their pubs which i think is a big deal personally

Hi, we have lived in Stamford for nearly 30 years now and can certainly recommend the area. Empingham is our favorite around the water. North and South Luffenham may also be worth a look although not directly on the water, Stamford, Oakham and Uppingham are also all great small towns with a distinctly slow pace of life. If your budget runs to £1m plus then Hambleton is the place to be.

Pretty views in Hambleton - the Finches is dire though

No kids just a dog, due to selling up in St. Albans we do have a decent budget but decent houses seem to come up so rarely it seems. Looking for something quiet Ish with good views but near biggish places like Stamford or Oakham.

Oh, we like the Finches Arms actually, although we generally only go there on a sunny day for a light lunch and a glass of wine on the terrace.

on paper it should be brilliant but it's got the worst service of any restaurant I've ever been in anywhere in the world and i'm not alone. Fox & Hounds in Knossington is the place to go.

Is it Paul Bailey who lives near Hambleton or some othereason supercar aficionado? Does Colin still own Finches Arms?

Yes it is Paul Bailey who lives in Hambleton, no idea who owns the Finches.

Will have to give F&H a try. I have to say I have never experienced bad service, but then again it's not normally very busy when we go.

To be fair anything with lakeside views is a little pricey - have you thought about the surrounding villages. Wing/North Luffenham, Preston, Langham

A little further afield you could look at harringworth/seaton with amazing welland valley views

(yes I know you may not be looking at pubs)

Not sure if the houses have been completed at Gunthorpe (small hamlet)

You've always got Hambleton Hall ;-)

And there is the resident petrol head with the "holy trinity"

To be honest the prices seem good to me coming from St. Albans as its so bloody expensive here. Lake views obviously only come up rarely so hopefully the timing will be right when We actually can do it in a year or so.

This is my patch so to speak, whilst not lakeside as such Uppingham, Barrowden & South Luffenham are rather nice. Good pubs/ walks and some decent twistys if that's important to you.
