A Petition started by Owen McDermott that is asking the government to enforce cyclists to have insurance
has passed the 37 000 figure.........

If you have not signed it yet then PLEASE see the petition Change .org...... be careful when seeing a different
petition that has stopped. It is understandable that many cyclists are retaliating and rubbishing Mr McDermott's
petition. Although the petition ran two weeks it gained 37. 000 signatures.
This is a major landmark petition because it is FOR DRIVERS to obtain equality if an accident occurs between a cycle
and any other object. I do not think it is right to tax cyclists because many use bikes because of economy however
insurance is a must due to the rights of all drivers being eroded by the day. Some cyclists already have
insurance and it is those cyclists who are deemed to be careful. Those who do not want to have insurance must have
their own reasons for their attitude which is of interest to all road users. If that is you then please speak up so that all
insured road users can listen to your reasons for not wanting to be covered by insurance.

Golfers have to have liability insurance why not all other dangerous activities? The article in the Sun etc states
a furious motorist has started a petition because the roads he rightly states are more dangerous because there
are more cyclists using them and some of those use the roads without the necessary care that should be attributable
to what is dangerous.

The guy who wrote the petition is a total idiot and deserved the flack he got. He ranted about not paying road tax etc and the usual anti cycling bullst. Most cyclist don't disagree that 3rd party cover is sensible and a lot have it through club membership.

Put a sensible argument together and most people agree use boring ridiculous tried cliches (like you OP) you deserve the stick you get!

EDIT to add, the guy who wrote the petition edited it to remove a lot of the anti cycling rubbish as he was pointed out he was wrong

Do golfers have to have liability insurance? I have been playing for many years and never held specific insurance.

Have I just incriminated myself? Oh god.

Golfers *should* have (third-party liability) insurance, as should cyclists. They don't have to though. Either is cheap (available for under £50 a year), and most regular golfers and cyclists do so already.

There are well over 1 million ununinsured cars on our roads at present. If your argument is about safety, and likelihood of incidents, then this is a way more important issue!

There's absolutely no reason why somebody who rides in the park with their kids should be forced to pay for cover for an unlikely event (injuring a third party), which if it happened they'd have to pay for out of their own pocket anyway. We don't need more reasons for people to keep driving rather than cycling short journeys. This is a bullst anti-cyclist anti-common sense petition, and this thread is just further antagonistic anti-cyclist bile.
