James here:

Talbots a bit market really as an Italian and the car park would be limited. I would have suggested the Bulls Head but now Seve has left it isn't the same...

The Railway at Shottle has some fantastic roads to it especially from Wirksworth and is quite near to Derby, big car park slightly chainy but that said I haven't been for a while. I'll drop in and check it out.I CERTAINLY would be happy to lengthen my drive from Matlock to the Railway anyday...superb road.

Thinking about it the Hanging Gate on the Belper road between Shottle and Belper would work... same roads slightly chainy BIG car park does reasonable food...

Maybe the first meet of the month could be at the white lion and then the secound at a different location...after time the different location after experience could become the stable first pub meet..

Hope that helps..

There are other alternatives out there maybe we should look around..not that I'm conplaining as I go past some fantastic roads on th way there. Thinking futher there is also the Red Lion at Hognaston in the Dales big car park but slightly off the beaton track and probebly a bit expensive.

Hope that helps.

Hanging Gate's a good idea, only a mile away from the town chippies! Pub grub's not bad either.

Talbot has a large car park oppisite btw, largely unused. I know the owner quite well and could ask for some privelleges. Steve (ex owner of the Bulls Head), is a regular in there, he now has a new pub near Crich that I've heard great things about but I'm not sure what the parkings like.

I like the Hanging gate too, because although it is a chain, its consistent and the food is OK, albeit of the 'Brakes bros', freshly defrosted on the premises' type. The ony downside for a bunch of car nuts is that it is very much a family pub, cant imagine the bar being swamped with car nuts laughing and talking with raised voices and the odd bit of language coming out. Car park is just the job though.

That's a good point! The Talbot is a regular haunt for car enthusiasts and there's regularly a decent collection parked outside.
What about the Anchor or Peacock on the Oakerthorpe road? Another two local favourites of petrol heads.

Peacocks gone a bit Chav central I'm afraid. Not sure about the other one. There's the Horse and Jocky in Wessington - nice car park

Shall we give The Talbot a go? Car Park is small, but there's plenty of on road parking around the triangular junction, and at East Mill.

Are any of these places further from Lincoln than Matlock?
I still quite like the drive there, only 2 or 3 speed cameras and some good roads.

Personally, no. We really need a place with a bigger and better carpark, not one where half the people will have to park down the road.

IMHO

Starkholmes is nice enough imo.

An alternative would be The Snipe, on the A38 at Sutton.
Big car park, good food, nice enough pub.

Sutton, we'll have to wear stab jackets unless it's away from the town centre!
