Gary,
Have sent you a couple of e-mails ref contacts, so hopefully something will work.
Burnie,
Yes up for the convoy, my car is stored at Norton so Chesterfield is only a short bomb down the bypass. I'll let you suggest a meeting place, but won't be checking my e-mails etc now until the early hours so I might not get back to you to confirm. Give me a 10 min window for meeting, if I'm not there head off without & hopefully I'll catch you up at the start. Not best known for my timekeeping, only reason I have a quick set of wheels is because I'm always making up time on my way everywhere.
Cheers - Dan.

Flipping heck what a busy weekend. I was up at the crack of dawn this morning to go marshalling on a car trial, on a nice long steep hill called Bamford Clough, in the Peak District. Me and mate Geoff left at 6am, got up there for 8, first car due at 9, and we should have been finished at 1pm. Never works like that though does it, so we got finished at about 4. Strange and interesting cars on the event though. F'rinstance, this, believe it or not, is an MGB GT grafted onto a VW Beetle floorpan:
Anyway, we had been instructed to park at the top of the hill and walk down. The track is a good half mile long or so, dead straight and bloody steep and slippy. At the end of the event, for some strange reason, I volunteered to hike back up the hill to fetch the car. Jesus christ almighty it nearly killed me. God, I am old, fat and unfit. I don't know what possesed me. I got to the car, drove round back down to the bottom of the hill, and while Geoff loaded the car up I slowly and quietly died. Gordon Bennett. This is a pic of the hill (sorry for the size of pics, haven't got this picture posting fully sorted). In the pic you can see one of these sickeningly fit mountain bikers, having to walk up the hill:
So after a protracted recovery period, we had a drive round the peaks in that area, very nice, found a nice pub (the Strines Inn) had a feast, and then hooned back as fast as poss in the Vee Dub. My little supercharged Mazda that I'll be using tomorrow was filthy, hadn't had chance to clean it in the week, so have just washed it and given it a quick vac in the dark. Don't know where I've been lately, but the front end is so badly stone chipped now that it looks like someones had a go at it with a shotgun.
Tommorow its up dawns crack again, firstly to record the Japanese Grand Prix. Then its into the car and a hoon to the meet point for 7.
Hope you guys don't mind an MX5 joining you. Its a bit humble in this company, but speed wise I think I'll be alright for keeping up, up to about 120 anyway.
See y'all tommorrow.
PS I mentioned a mountain bike. Some intrepid downhillers zoomed down, and we were intrigued to see this one, with only one front fork.

Did anyone crash on the dawn raid?
Hope not!
Heebeegeetee, i was at Bamford and Millers Dale yesterday and then had a 300-mile journey afterwards!
I know the area quite well, the R1200GS sailed me up there dead easy earlier this year, but it is a tough climb in old cars. I know a couple of people who do the classic trials every year. They don't make the hill at Bamford sometimes!

I'm back! Flipping heck that was fast. (The Raid, I mean. ) Don't think I've ever travelled so quickly for so long in daylight in England ever! I really mean that.
Been driving for about 7.5 hours too, and yet its still only lunch time. Brilliant!
Thanks for a great morning Gary, and thanks to the rest of you guys for great driving and great company. Must do it again.
Am sorting some pics out.
Beemer-5, were you at the start of the Bamford climb yesterday?

Yep... cheers Gary. A very varied morning I'll give you that ... woods, seaside, holiday camps, truckers' cafes and, the largest moving P.Heads vehicle I've ever come across
Oh, and thanks for the speed check too
I went somewhat faster in another German number later on ... 197mph to be precise!
Good to put some more names to faces. And Mick, that MX of yours is quite outstanding!
Until the next one ... or BTAP!

Come for a Dawn Raid, they said. Come for a damn good hoon, they said. Righto, I said. And when I get there, who do I find is the leader, and in what?
It’s Carl, in his Winnibago:

The Tuscan just looked fantastic. I tried to get a wicked arty-farty mirror /reflection shot of it, but this seems the best I could do. Still, you must say that I’ve captured my camera a treat, eh?
You thought I was joking about the Winnie, didn’t you?
