^ Timing chain should be done according to service intervals, otherwise you can leave it alone unless you think you have problems, rattles etc, which could be slack tensioners or broken guides. The timing is fixed so won't have changed unless there is a major fault. Changing a chain is probably time consuming and expensive and is done as a preventative measure. Do you have problems or any idea of factory recommendations for chain replacements? Belts need to be changed more frequently on cars which use belts. Caliper refurb is more likely to be cosmetic, do like them painted? If so, wire brush and a pot of paint will do the job. As well as that you can grease any pins and put copperslip on the backs of the pads to keep everything working smoothly.

Hi Boosted!

When I got the VR6 the owner of the garage did explain to me pretty much what you have said about timing chains. I had my car serviced at every 10,000 miles, with oil and filter change at 5,000 but given that I did this course Jan-April I chose to not have the 10,000 service that was due in that time. The timing chain is fine but it would be good to know how it is checked.

I greased up the pins and parts of pads that touch the disc when I changed my pads and discs in March. I just thought a wire brush would bring the calipers up a treat. I don't have the facilities or tools to do this at home. (Well, I do have the wire brush).

Truth be told, I really enjoyed the course and would love to do another one. I have had so much done to my car now that there really is not much left to do. If I had pots of money I'd be looking at Shrick manifold, full S/S exhaust system (only Magnex back box at present) and respray.

Hi Emma, You'll be doing full rebuilds next! I think with chains it's a case of hearing the wear or noticing wear marks on the sprockets once the engine covers have been removed. It may be possible to feel if the chains a bit slack in the same way that you would test an alternator belt but only if there's an aperture where you can get your fingers into.

Emma, to answer your question about what people want, i shouldchip in with what i'd love to see! To be honest though, as long as i get my hands dirty i don't really care.

At my current college course, we have touched the basics of brakes, suspension, engine, cooling & ignition. What i'd love to do is to go into more detail on the engine & 'box bits... I'd love to strip, refurb and rebuild one of each, even if i bought a lump myself and left it at the college somehow...

My main focus lies here because eventually i want to build my own kit car (once we move to a house with a garage). general servicing is something i'm fairly confident with myself.

As long as it's practical experience though then i'm game for whatever gets done, i just don't want more boring theory. The only drawback for me is i would have preferred a week night, but Saturday morning is do-able (i live near loughborough though, just work in mansfield)...

Thanks Eltax and Tracy for your input. I'll wait a while longer to see what other people want before getting back to Trevor.

Put my name down anyway, I'm sure I can help others, and I would like to get to a lift once or twice during the course, that's all I ask or need out of it.

I'm not sure how much time I can commit at present but would actually welcome the break and it would be a good way to keep in touch with all you guys.

Psst! Barney's in need of a good clean and some TLC Warrenwink

I'm still up for this; like Warren, i could do with doing some chassis work on the Chim up on the 4 poster, but could use the general experience of working on cars.

Hello all!

I have relayed all your thoughts and wish lists to Trevor. He says that it all sounds do-able so he and Russ will put something together over the next few weeks. Once they have done so they will email the course scheme to me along with details of times and pricing to post on here for you all to see.

The proposal is every other Saturday morning 9.00 - 12.00 over several weeks. I for one think that this is a great idea as I could not really commit to every Saturday.

No news as yet. Was wondering myself over the weekend as I need to have a poke around the clutch and gearbox. I will try them again at lunchtime and post as soon as I have any news.

Had a chat with Russ this afternoon. It is going ahead still but I will need to speak with Trevor first thing tomorrow to get the finer details. Watch this space!

No news as yet. Trevor has been mega busy given it is induction time with start of year pressures so haven't managed to speak with him yet.

I've just about given up with this now after Lord knows how many phone calls and an email.

If anyone else wants to try to sort this out please feel free. I have hardly any - maybe two Saturdays - free before Christmas. The way things are going with work I won't be able to commit to many, if any, Saturdays after Christmas either. Shame as I did really enjoy working on my car and learning about car maintenance. I had the best time ever too with you guys, Russ and young Rob.

sorry to resurrect an old post, but does anyone know a car maintenance course local to Mansfield?

I contacted West Notts today after finding this post, but they don't run it anymore. I also tried Sutton Centre who do part time/evening courses but nothing there either.

Any help would be appreciated.
