Took a trip down today. The plain really is quite something - shame you can't get to more usually but then it wouldn't be the same if you could.
I was surprised at the relative lack of buildings - some obviously new. Had a nose around the old pub - wouldn't want to be under those metal roofs in the wind we have had recently.
Some sort of event on. Loads of motorbikes and a big meeting in the church. Old photos were good.
Roads were rather narrow and not for fast travel but not the point really. Not ideal for a 911 either but a nice trip all the same.

Was it OK for a 911 though? Thinking about going on New Years day. I was surprised at the relative lack of buildings - some obviously new. Had a nose around the old pub - wouldn't want to be under those metal roofs in the wind we have had recently.

We went through yesterday from north to south, was very strange and interesting, especially with cyclists everywhere.
When we eventually got the village it was packed, parked cars everywhere, motorcyclists as well as runners on the warminster side.
Roads were not too bad, even though the car is now covered in mud. Worth the trip

Another vote of thanks. I came in from the Heytesbury entrance (off the A36) - there was a frisson of excitement about driving in an area that is normally off-limits. About a mile of this route does not have a tarmac surface so was glad that I took the Passat & not the Z4. Left via Bratton - some big potholes were on this route too.
For those who have not managed the trip, I believe Imber remains open until next Monday. I'm considering a return trip at the weekend with the bike so I can explore all the roads that are open to the public.
Returned via Caen Hill locks at Devizes - another "must see"
Many thanks to OP - the power of PH

I went down here yesterday with another PH'er and despite the weather's best effort had a good look around. It is such a shame they demolished so many of the existing buildings. But what a playground they have there. Would make an excellent paintballing session! Did a similar session at Greenham common base before it was flattened to make way for the current Industrial Site.
For those that enjoyed a walk around Imber there is public pathways for walkers on the plain which bring you very close to the 'German Village'
