If you're of a sporting bent, we have CSCC, CSRFC, CSGC, CSTC, CSTFC (cricket, rugby, golf, tennis, soccerball) across the road and a zillion lycra clad **** on all manner of push bikes every bleeding weekend.
Every Tuesday its the hotrods and custom meet at Old Sodbury. Twice a year the darn fair comes to town, plus Victorian evening, just missed vintage and classic car show, plays and musicals in the Town Hall and live music most nights in one of the pubs. Plenty I've missed/forgotten I'm sure.

Did they run out of money when building the train line to Thornbury or just think better of it?
There used to be a station in Thornbury, more or less at the Tesco roundabout. The line went to Yate, of all places. I can't remember when it closed to passenger traffic, but the line from Yate was in use as far as the quarry at Tytherington until a couple of years ago.

There's still a couple of railway bridges and a bit of embankment left at the back of Alexandra workwear. It's a popular place to take one's dog for a crap.

Was just looking a map and following the train line for potential locations when it abruptly stopped just short of the town.

That's right. It's a mixed blessing that there's no station. I'm pretty sure it means that property is less expensive than it would otherwise be, which I see as a good thing. It also means that Thornbury keeps an identity of its own, rather than becoming a dormitory town for Bristol.

We can get a taxi from Bristol home for about £40, which seems a lot to me, and that's the only downside. We generally drive in, leave a car overnight, then pick it up the next day (once we're sober).

Thornbury's great. The nearest stations are Parkway or Cam and Dursley. Stonehouse isn't a lot further, and has a decent London service. I'd imagine commuting to UWE would be a pain in the arse, though.

The Campus is at Frenchay and there are student busses that run from Parkway, so getting there is key if we are North.

  • looks like a bus (312?) goes to the Campus from Thornbury.

You could be right. We're going to get the bus in on Saturday for the first time. I can't remember why, but I'm sure there's a very good reason. There's a house for rent just down the road from me, but I think it's a 4 bed. Probably about £1100-1200/month.

When it turns up... it really is hit and miss.

Once into winter you'll be lucky to see a bus early on a weekday morning.

A colleague tried it for three weeks from Thornbury and gave up. The buses weren't simply reliable enough for getting to work, some mornings some didn't even turn up, nor the following bus.

From living in the vicinity of UWE we moved away as the traffic preventing us to have a life outside of work. Once home, we couldn't even run to the Supermarket much before 20:00. See attached. I popped up the chippy only to get stuck - taken out of frustration.

If you have to be near UWE and your placement, I'd suggest staying local to it. There is a railway station nearby £3.80 return into Bristol otherwise you will need to come to terms with sitting in traffic and lots of it on your commute, which is more than usual a ball ache. There are no "rural" stations as such. Patchway Filton Yate serve the North side of Bristol, most of which are no where near anywhere fitting your criteria.

We live in Long Ashton not far from these two. It's a nice balance between being close to the city and access to the country. Reasonable buses into the centre, close to the airport (but not too close) and quick to the motorway, too. However, it's the wrong side of the city for UWE and there isn't a train station within easy reach apart from Temple Meads.

Bear in mind that the placements you get from UWE will most likely be miles away.

Buses from north of Bristol are a bit hit and miss during rush hour. But then I assume that's the case anywhere.

I live in Portishead and if you wait five years they're likely to reopen the railway here...

If you're looking slightly out of Bristol and for transport, try looking at the Kings Ferry routes which are now operating in North/south Bristol and North Somerset.

I was living in Portishead, and could take me well over an hour some days to get into or home from work. M5 is a nightmare of a commute! Am now in Bradley Stoke area, still working in Filton and if i leave at the right time can take 10mins to get to work. Also if you look in the right places, there are some real hidden gems around here, all the fun of living in an old house with character and features, but also practical for transport and shops etc.

I live in Whitchurch in South Bristol and although the bus service is absolutely shight, getting into the centre from there, (at 8AM) isn't too bad and is manageable. I leave mine to go to Avonmouth at 7, and get there at half past, unless the bridge on cumberland basin is open then it's 10-15 later. It's a chilled, if uneventful drive in but it works.

If you commute to the centre though, it's 1 bus, and I think (might have changed, not used buses in years!) that it's £4 for a day-rider?

You can pick up some really nice, large houses in Whitchurch for okay pricing, and my area in particular is quiet and I have no worry leaving the car on the street.

Good example.

We moved to Nailsea about 5 years ago and are pretty happy with the place. Small town but big enough to have trains to Bristol every 30 mins, its own supermarkets Tesco, Waitrose, a few decent restaurants. Backwell is also nice.

If your budget will stretch the best place to live imo is the leafy northern suburbs beyond the downs; Sneyd Park, Westbury-on-Trym & Henleaze.

UWE is just a short jaunt down Southmead Road, central Bristol takes me 15 mins and the area is just lovely with much greenery and nice parks.

All good info so far. Hopefully have an update soon on placement location. Someone at work suggested that the Dower House had been converted into flats and they include a garage...

Henleaze is probably going to be more than I want to pay as there is so few suitable rentals (most are family size houses). Will look into the others though.

Sneyd Park has a good many mansions that have been divided into (rather nice) flats. My boss rents there when down from London.

This kind of thing...

I grew up in Bristol but left last year as the city has become a joke. Cyclists everywhere, voted worst traffic in the UK, laughable house prices and residents parking infecting most areas.

I also work from home and my O/H works near UWE. We live between Westonbirt and Sherston and it takes her 25 mins of always clear roads to get to work (in Bristol you may cover 2 miles in that time). Public transport links aren't great out here but running a car is cheaper than Bristol public transport (and it won't leave without you in the morning)
