I'm in Fishponds in a leafy cul-de-sac of semis - easy to get to UWE or the city.

Worth looking around Fishponds / Downend / Frenchay - lots of very decent places to live and excellent facilities too.

Henleaze is probably going to be more than I want to pay as there is so few suitable rentals (most are family size houses). Will look into the others though.
No not at all, I have some 2 & 3 bed houses in Lakewood road all approx £ 900 pcm.

So placement has been confirmed as at either UWE or Filton. So will probably concentrate search around Chipping Sodbury and villages, as I reckon will only get a flat in the desirable parts of Bristol and really want something a bit bigger (garden, garage etc).

Shame that the outlying villages aren't better served by public transport. Will have to do some man-maths to decide whether I want to run a car daily.

Having been brought up there...If I had to choose a place to live outside Bristol I would choose, Hampshire, Cornwall or Wiltshire smile

To be honest, Sodding Chitbury is not all that bad apart from the fact it is now attached to Yate......which is utterly utterly utterly sh!t.

Tied to transport network unfortunately. Otherwise the missus will have to drive everyday, and I'll have to get some frugal little runabout that will sap my will to live, when I was planning to get some weekend barge goodness....

Need to crunch some numbers but as I don't currently have a car, it's going to mean another "moving" expense.

This has some charm to it: http://www.zoopla.co.uk/to-rent/details/33764478 although if I'm going to have to maintain a daily runner, I'd really like a garage.

This is cheaper than my current one bedroom flat...... http://www.zoopla.co.uk/to-rent/details/17604605wobble

Wickwar options you could drive to Yate and train from there...

If you are living/commuting from Chipping Sodbbury to Filton/UWE then Id suggest:

Walk/Cycle to Yate Station - c30min walk/10min Bike Ride
Train to Filton Abbey Wood
Walk to UWE (10min walk direct route, 20min indirect "loop") or Placement - e.g.20min walk to Airbus/BAE.

You tend to find most of the stations on the Yate route into Bristol have decent secure cycle lockers than bog standard stands if you fancy the cycle ride.

I really really wouldnt arse about on the bus. Come November you'll spend more time on it, than not.

I lived in Filton for 8 years and as said before the traffic did our heads in.

Also things to consider if driving. Alot of the major employers in the Filton area are over subscribed for parking and therefore limit parking to permement staff only, or staff OUTSIDE of a set radius area.

Filton Town Council in efforts to restrict the impact of this, have in their wisdom painted Double Yellows throughout the residential areas of Filton. The local Sainsburys, B&Q, Shopping Centres and business parks all clamp/ticket (FWIW).

Agree on both parts. Having a car would definitely give us a lot more options. But then I have to buy a car (a depressing one at that) which I hadn't really budgeted for until after we have moved. Then there are things to consider which I take for granted, such as decent broadband for work...

Nothing is ever easy banghead

Given up on buses; the routes and timetables are a mess. Simply not feasible. I'm surprised at how poorly served the outlying areas are by trains - no stops between Parkway and Swindon for example. I guess I've just got use to being able to go anywhere, at any time in London.

North was preferred destination but might start looking at area's in the South & East that are served by stations running into BTM.

I commute from Bath to Filton. Frequent direct trains from Bath Spa/Oldfield Park/Keynsham to Filton Abbey Wood or Parkway.

I also cycle/run it sometimes - traffic free the whole way from Bath to UWE/Filton. The cycle networks around Filton are pretty good.

Bath is a lovely place to live but not cheap and the commute can be draining. Good luck with your search!

When I run/cycle through Frenchay village it always looks nice. Easy access to UWE and Filton.

What's your idea of "Frenchay"? The only properties currently available are 4/5 bedroom houses.

I just did a Rightmove search for Frenchay + 0.5 miles up to £900/month and got mainly flats rather than houses. confused

There's a big new development just behind UWE on Stoke Park that might be worth looking at - doesn't fit your "countryside" criteria although Stoke Park Estate is nice, they all seem to have allocated parking. Very convenient for UWE and ok for Parkway station.

I had a similar decision to you 16 years ago and looked at everywhere within a 25 mile radius of Aztec West (where I worked at the time).

I chose and still live nr. Thornbury which is a lovely town/surroundings(no good for trains but buses OK) - can rent 3/4 beds for £800/£1100 or buy for £180k/£300+ and cheaper in some outlying areas eg Charfield (very commutable down the M5 1 Junction).

Regards, Paul.

Welcome to Bristol smile

Don't forget Cam and Dursley has a rail connection, which is commutable from the North/ North East of Bristol.

Other wise, Yatton, Nailsea Backwell that sort of direction might be a possibility from the South?

We moved to Nailsea about 5 years ago and are pretty happy with the place. Small town but big enough to have trains to Bristol every 30 mins, its own supermarkets Tesco, Waitrose, a few decent restaurants. Backwell is also nice.
I lived in Nailsea for years and my folks are still there so I still pop by fairly often (what car do you drive by the way, the 6MPS? might keep an eye out).

Anyway, Nailsea has decent transport links to Bristol. Buses and trains and fairly regular and quite reliable. It's a nice "safe" (dull) town with some reasonable countryside around it plenty in terms of shops, gyms, pubs etc.

I've always felt Backwell has more character, and I think prices are generally lower, but it is lacking a bit in terms of shops and what not. It's also long, way too long. So is Long Ashton, too long, too much walking.

Clevedon is ok, some very nice areas and a lovely seafront with some good walks and a few good places to eat. Not as good for transport though as a bit further out and no train service.

Chipping Sodbury always looked rather nice to me but obviously sounds like it's a pain in the arse to actually get into Bristol from.
