Son recently moved to Plymouth and inevitably, his Mk4 Golf has developed what sounds like a wheel bearing gone. Too long to leave it before he can get home so any suggestions as to a decent service garage in Plymouth that could look after him?

Not a fan of main dealers and would help if it is in the City to keep access easy, any suggestions much appreciated.

Thanks in advance

There's a chap on here called Bomber Denton who runs the EBT just across the Plym, opposite the Recycling Centre.

I've been using Station View garage for over a decade and they've always been pretty fair. The maser is going there in a week or so for some minor bits that don't really need £££/hour dealer rates.

As the name might suggest, they're on the approach road to the train station near the City centre.

I use Phil Davies to service my Audi, VAG specialist. Never had any issues with pricing or work there, definitely worth a shot.

Happy to help if needs be, I'm away from Wednesday for a week but apart from that I'm in if you need me?

Never realised there was a PHer in Plymouth with a tyre place.

I've just ordered a pair of rears for the Maser to go on when I get back next week. The place I usually use seems to have gone downhill since Mr Schmidt stopped running it too frown

If you want someone to look after your rims when they change a tyre, then a visit to Corin is a must. He also does other jobs as required. Prices are good enough that you dont need to shop around any more

Well Mytyres (or "mytyre" as they are now known in our house) have finally delivered the second tyre of the pair I ordered a fortnight ago.

The first one was pretty quick, but the second took several emails, phone calls, printing out, signing, and returning an affidavit to say I wasn't robbing them (originally requested by FAX or post - to Germany, but finally accepted by email the second time I sent it), and then a frantic search to see if they had another one somewhere in stock.

And then when I said to Ed about fitting he said if I wanted tracking I should go to Colin at ETB over the bridge as he had better alignment kit for my car.

Ho hum - you live and learn.

Well after the chap who was supposed to be fitting my tyres got a thrombosis in his leg the day the second one arrived, this afternoon I slung one in the boot, took it out again as the boot wouldn't close, put them on the back seat and went over the bridge to ETB tyres.

There I met Corin, who was very helpful, incredibly polite, even though I must have called him "Colin" 3 times before I twigged it wasn't a typo by Giles. He set his extremely careful and well trained minions to work whilst I fussed around like a mother hen, and they carefully changed the tyres and let me check the rims where I thought I'd damaged one on a pothole, cleaned the wheels(!), and did stuff.

Then they checked the tracking on his rather amazing but sinister looking machine, twice, as the readings were way out from spec but the tyre wear was quite even. The toe readings were all pretty much exactly double the spec, so there was a suspicion this might have been done deliberately. I'll find out about this and then get to them and get them to adjust it all if needed.

I put my card in the machine and pressed the buttons, and it wasn't until I got home and looked at the bill that I realised quite what a ridiculously reasonable price he had charged me.

All in all highly recommended. You could leave the car there and take the wife for a treat around "The Range" across the road while you wait smile

This place is great - what a find. Reasonable prices despite modern kit. Only place I could find that bother to weight the car properly for alignment as well. They happily fitted and balanced tyres for me sourced on-line as well. My go-to place for tyre fitting and wheel alignment now.
