San Carlos is actually a chain, albeit on a smaller scale (though I will admit, just about my favourite 'upscale' choice in Bristol)

Excellent food and service, always
Have to agree with that, they've had a management change which has ironed out a few niggles and a re-furb in the last few weeks

I've booked a table at steak of the art on the back of this thread too smile

Is anyone going to mention Pumphouse? Great food and a lovely walk along the dockside... Or it was until the clocks went back... On the walk you would also pass Spitfire, another rib n burger joint with pretty authentic BBQ setup - the St Louise ribs were great... The Ox my current favourite for steak but book early for a saturday night and try the bavette - flavour of a ribeye without the fat...

Good call on the Bavette, massive fan of that cut, the sprouts there are amazing too (controversial I know).

Budget heading slowly north... scratchchin
Having had the GS with Carrs for the second week running, and new tyres the week before that, and new discs, pads, AND calipers on the rear of the MR2 last week too, I've given up on budgeting frown

Incidentally, the correct answer is to jump on a train to Bath and sample Cowshed, or Hudson, or Herd wink
Or just go the Cowshed in Bristol?

Bordeuax Quay is decent. I like Riverstation down on the waterfront (not cheap but not too horrendous either).

Primrose Cafe up in Clifton is lovely and not a million miles from the Anson Rooms. Probably one of the best independent restaurants in bristol, great food and atmosphere and all local/seasonal stuff.

For a chain I always find Prezoo surprisingly nice and it's in a nice location and building in Bristol just off the centre.

Not a big fan of Severnshed personally. food is average and it's a bit big and noisey/echoey in there for me.

I quite like El Puerto, also down by the harbour as it just does simple, nice and varied tapas and, as long as you both enjoy eating similar things, tapas is always a brilliant way to enjoy food.

Juniper gets my vote, lovely food and attentive staff in a non pretentious setting.
Pleased to hear that the service has improved. Food has always been good but I have had some right shockers in terms of slow/crap service there although that was a couple of years ago.

It's been there at least a couple of years. Just down from the gym. Been once. Very poor service so paid for the drinks and left.

I can highly recommend Steak of the Art after going Fri night. Finished it off my going to the Cuban bar over the road. What a fun evening

Star and Dove in Totterdowm www.staranddove.co.uk
Greens Dining Room in Redland www.greensbristol.co.uk
or the Raj on King Street for an Indian (best vindaloo in Bristol)

I've lived here for 15+ years and having eaten out a lot, cant really say any of the other places mentioned are worthy of the glowing reviews

I'm afraid that Greens didn't float my boat last time I was there: pokey table and uninspiring menu. I'd rather go to the Kensington Arms for the money they are charging.

Meh

I'll give it 6.5/10

The misses Pork schnitzel (loads of it) was barely edible, in fact she/we couldn't cut it with the steak knife I was given

And once again the 'would you like to order now?' before we had any drinks!!!

The magician was a nice touch though smile

6.5/10 was generous! I wouldn't have been.

I hesitate to recommend this place any more because it's reputation is now such that it can be tricky getting a table. By far my favourite curry house in Bristol these days.

I do eat out quite a lot but I've concluded my tastes are fairly crude. Having tried alot of the 'upscale' places find myself going back to old friends like Giuseppes on the Steps and Don Giovannis near BTM. Simple unpretentious fare in relaxing, friendly places and IMO all the better for it.
