To be fair, the second time he was more than 50% over the limit, and probably more than that on his speedo.

However, I didn't think plod were bothering to enforce 20 limits - certainly down in Devon they've said as much as they are supposed to be self enforcing. I wonder how fast the cyclists were going through there - be nice to see justice metered out fairly.

[quote]The policeman obliged, explaining the new road marking around the housing development and the 20mph speed limit - but failed to mention to Mr Boughton that he had just booked him for speeding - once in each direction.
I took that as he was booked for speeding not driving in a bus lane

I got a email today at work to help to keep the 20 limit and extent this

Why are people so blind they think dropping 10MPH will make people more aware of the traffic and look before crossing a road. How many of you have had people young and old not look or just have poor perception when it comes to traffic and simply crossing the road.

Went to Bristol last week for the first time since the 20mph limit was introduced. What total effing piss take, I am sure I may have broken the limit a number of times, for many roads its nothing like the natural limit.

If per chance I did break it, I didn't see a single person killed or injured.

I am so glad that I moved my business out of Bristol. I am just looking at setting up a new south west office that will employ about 20 people. That will not be located in Bristol, we need to be able to move around efficiently to carry out our business.

You're a bit wide of the mark if you think you cannot move efficiently in a city around at 20mph vs 30mph. If everything moved at 20mph in London it would be a bloody godsend, but it doesn't average speeds are far far below 20mph.

I've not been to Bristol, but I imagine its a fairly busy place, just how wide is this 20mph limit? Is it really making any difference to journey times? I HIGHLY doubt it is...

Its 20mph round a lot of where I live, they're not super bothered about enforcing it but I know average speeds on journeys are so low that it makes little difference to the time it takes me to get anywhere.

London has an effective mass transit system, Bristol doesn't, not even close. With regards to moving around efficiently, its inefficient if my people are getting speeding tickets, and if it takes 30% longer to cross the city, that is significant. The whole Bristol ethos is to make cars virtually un useable, but they have no suitable replacement.

Interestingly we asked our south west staff where they would like to be based. Bristol was near the bottom of the list, even for people who currently live there.

SWIM had a race with a BMW 135i M Sport and an Audi R8 V10 up Bond Street on a day recently which will not be mentioned, but I'm certain they kept it below 20mph.

On the whole I stay out of Bristol because of the 20mph limit, so you see Mr F it is adversely effecting the city's revenue and visitors. Not a popular move and what a waste of money on yet more street furniture and white paint!

The 20 limit is pretty much the whole of bristol apart from a few main roads

it's not about the fact we have a new 20 limit but how it has been rolled out. IE in a stupid way. your on a long straight wide road. 20 limit. 200 yards before lights it then becomes a 30 limit!!!

Around small residential areas and schools, hospitals that's fine by me but turning my local main road, the Kingsway to a 20 is just stupid.
large wide road. Big grass verge on a lot of the road. No deaths on there in the 20 years i've been living and using the road daily.

You will be 20mph for a mile, then 30 for 400 yards, then 20 then back up to 30 for a set of lights then back to 20.

So it's more about how and where they have been introduced than the fact we have them at all

Sounds suspiciously like revenue producing 'speed traps' to me!!

Strange you said that. I had been talking only a few weeks ago to a recently Ex police man (Retired) who said the same.

Strange that we think the same.

Well the city won't spend all that money for no return, it is NOT out of the goodness of there hearts no matter what they tell us. It is yet another revenue stream for the city, plain and simple. How many people do you think will get caught and fined every day? It's almost impossible not to once in a while let your speed creep up over 20mph. Stick to 20 and see just how slow it really is and how long you last before you do say, 25mph!! You are then already 25% over the speed limit!!! It's a slam dunk speeding fine, how much will that be, maybe £80 a time at a guess?? Multiply by the number caught every day and there is your revenue. It's business disguised as road safety and 'green issues', that is all.

Yeh....raised by a Cycle Activist...a Publicly paid "professor" of Mathematics at Bristol Uni.
Not a care for the effect except on his "lifestyle"....the rest can fo because I can cycle to work so it has to be better.

I average between 9 and 11mph over a 450mile range tank in London. Stop complaining.
