Anyone already p***ed off with the 20 MPH limit in Bristol
Discussion
My observations so far...
There's a new breed of driver out there - the 25er! So confused by all the changes in limit they just do 25 everywhere.
Pedestrians think they can just walk across any road 'cos we're all driving slowly now.
I'm always checking my speedo and playing with the manual selection on the DSG (or using more brakes).
Always on the throttle to get up inclines, no momentum see 'cos I stick to 20... must be using more fuel.
Cyclists - often in conflict as they're doing 20+ on the downhill stretches and levels then slow on the inclines. Sure this is putting them at greater risk.
Major roads with 20mph limits? FFS
Very glad I don't drive for a living now.

Took SWMBO into Bristol on Friday night which also coincided with my first experience since the wider adoption of the 20mph limit.
One thing that struck me was the terrible condition of the road surfaces in most of the 20mph areas - sunken manhole covers, subsidence due to trees etc and it got me wondering... the adoption of the 20mph limit was a means for the council to reduce the maintenance burden as a result of the lower limits (and therefore potential reduced "safety case")??

Given Bristol's unique sense of justice (false 'out of order' signs on RPZ meters, not being happy about tesco on stokes croft etc...) surely the "pace car" initiative with the stickers etc will fall in to the hands of people with some tasty machinery...
Most times in the city I'm sure 20mph would be a godsend. I can cycle most places within the city quicker than it takes to drive. Just a shame that my bike would get stolen if i did!

I've just driven along Conham Vale next to the Netham. Three things struck me:
The road is now mostly a 20mph zone.
The exit from the car park and the really sharp bend at the Hanham end are still 30pmh !
There are 20mph signs regularly painted on the road surface and a whole batch of 20mph signs have appeared..........
But the pot holes and unlit projected kerbs haven't been touched.

Unfortunately its typical Ferguson and his motto of "you can say what you want, but in the end I will have my way".
I'm all for traffic calming and really wouldn't mind it if speed limits right next to schools etc. were dropped significantly, but this blanket ruling and the mayors' attitude stinks to high heaven. I for one can't wait to vote him out of office, it's just a pity that that can't happen earlier than the end of his term, by which time he would have imposed even more of his edicts, even if they fly in the face of existing evidence.

Since all this parking and speed limits things have come in to force in Bristol I have not visited and so long as it stays in place I wont be visiting again. I personally find driving at 20 exhausting as even in the slowest of cars its incredibly easy to go over it.
And the mayor will see this as a success. You see he does not want your type in his city. If you ride a bike, hate cars you are his type of guy and are welcome to his Utopian nightmaregrkify said:
Agreed Exeter's mayors not a car hating twit! They are both bigger than Yeovil and have a John Lewis there the same in my eyes lol
Just pointing out something.Bristol doesn't have a John Lewis store. The nearest one is in Cribbs Causeway which isn't in Bristol, and isn't affected by the 20mph speed limit

The JL website does indeed say "Bristol" on the store list, however when you click the link it then says "Cribbs Causeway". AFAIK there is no JL in the actual city, and you don't encounter a 20mph speed limit on the way to Cribbs unless you drive through the centre to get there, which you'd only do if you actually lived in the centre. John Lewis say they are in Bristol and there is a 20mph speed limit there.

And interestingly plans have been submitted to extend massively Cribbs Causeway and guess who has objected? Yep Bristol council as they have said that it would harm the economy of Bristol centre. The very same place the car hating mayor wants to stop people driving into.
So the expensive parking, traffic chaos, poor public transport and draconian limits on main roads has nothing to do with it.
Interestingly, John Lewis did have a store in Broadmead Bristol up until 1998 when they moved to Cribbs. They are now looking at opening a new type of store for electrical goods on a smaller scale in Cabots Circus if test stores elsewhere work out.

Anyone noticed the stupid places they have put the 20 limits. The wife mentioned it to me over the weekend
You go along a wide straight road (20 limit) get to within a 100 yards of a some lights and it goes to a 30 limit. Then 100 yards after the lights it's back to a 20?
So the council want people to speed up the closer they get to a set of lights????
Whats all the about. fking more daft ideas of making the roads safer
