Going to Exeter for 2 nights this weekend, staying at the Magdalen Chapter. Book in to Michael Caines' Abode for the tasting menu. Any other recommendations for bars, stuff to do, food etc?

The underground passages are, as you'd expect, dark and narrow, so not for the claustrophobic. They're also remarkably dull.

Inside the City itself are the usual bland generic chain stores interspersed with the remnants of the old buildings - get a guide leaflet to find out what you're looking at. The Royal Albert Museum is well worth a visit, especially if you need to occupy kids or parents for several hours. Also the new Minions movie comes out this weekend, so a boozy lunch and the matinee seems on the cards for us smile

A lot of chain eateries as to be expected, but also some good Indys like Angelas and The Conservatory. You will need to book, and might be too late now.

Further out there are the moors, Topsham is a nice place for a stroll and lunch (but gets very busy, esp on a Sunday), and a small trip to the petite Moretonhamstead Motor museum to kill a couple of ours, or the other ones at this site.

90 mins away is the excellent Eden Centre, where we will be on Sat night as they have an open ampitheatre. Elton John was there for 2 nights last week, this Saturday is Motorhead and The Stranglers!

A walk down the river/canal to the double locks for a pint - then take the ferry to the turf locks for more pints and a bite to eat? Or if your keen you can hire a kayak/canoe or bikes to do the trip - not a bad way to spend time if the weathers nice.

As above the museum is worth seeing, Agreed the tunnels can be a bit dull.
There's a classic car show in a field opposite a pub just outside sidmouth on Saturday (blue ball)

If keen on the walking/cycling, there are paths down both sides of the estuary now. I think you can get from Exmouth to Dawlish now, with most of it off-road. From Starcross there is a passenger ferry than crosses the river fairly often.
