Nice places to live near Exeter?

Currently in Wilts but Mrs M3ax is considering going back to Uni and Exeter looks good for her field. Its early days but we quite like the idea of getting back closer to the sea. Just wondering which areas to avoid, which to seek out etc. Young family so schools need to be considered. Village life preferable (currently in a semi rural setting ) so long as there is a pub etc and we can get to restaurants/coffee without too much hassle. My work is a combination of London and Newark (I know) so I'm used to having to be away from time to time. Exeter St Davids to Paddington seems doable and I'm used to the drive to Newark which will probably be at least an hour onto my journey.
Obviously I'll need a new car because man maths.
Any advice or anecdotes gratefully received!

Without knowing a budget, or school age, there are actually a couple of very nice enclaves right on top of the uni.

All within 20 min walk of the station and 10 mins of the uni.
Going out slightly, you might be better off staying North of the river towards Crediton and the environs. Getting across the river can be a PITA as the main roads over get very congested. Otherwise head East, over the M5 and out towards Sidmouth - plenty of nice villages that direction.
Also the new Cranbrook development if that sort of thing floats your boat - definately a young family oriented development, lots of neatly packaged low maintenance places.

Broadclyst is lovely, good Primary & secondary schools, pubs, post office etc. A short drive from Exeter & all major trunk roads, airport etc. Silverton, Rewe & Stoke Canon are all nearby villages.Kids are 4 and 6. Woodbury / Woodbury Salterton - probably serious $$$ though
Whimple - meant to be nice.
Ottery St Mary - maybe a little far / more like a town

I may add an alternative opinion
West of Exeter provides more seaside but yes access is more of an issue. I live in Newton Abbot which has good schools 5 primary & 2 secondary, 15 mins to Exeter but Newton has its own mainline station direct to Paddington. But it gives you acces to Torbay, Teignmouth, Totnes and the South Hams (the prettiest part of Devon).
Watch the prices, they will guide you to quality. The smaller the house for 400k, the better the area!

It is ideal for what you need, 10 mins walk to a mainline station, 4 beds, garage, quiet area, needs a couple of finishing touches, and in a beautiful suburb of Exeter known as Ply-Mouth, somewhere you might not have thought of as being unfamiliar to the area.
No need to pop down and view, it will be perfect for you.

being that we spend some time hooning around country A-roads aswell as shooting up the A303 to events, you could choose anything from a westfield/kit car up to a supercar. However I would suggest if you want to come out with us lot, probably avoid lambo's and XJ220's as they are a)too wide and b) likely to be hit by an uninsured farmer in his 20 year old Subaru !
