Villages near Taunton

Trull, Staplehay, Pitminster, Blagdon Hill, Corfe all good as they are close enough to the town to be convenient but far enough out to be remote. All of those mentioned have easy links to Devon as you can go up over the Blackdowns and be on the A303 easily without going through Taunton. From my house (opposite Queen's College very near Trull) to Lyme Regis/Axminster is only 40 minutes.
Several decent schools around that side of town - Queen's College (private), the Castle School and a host of smaller ones. This side of town means your kids won't need a stab vest...
There is talk of a big development at Comeytrowe which may or may not happen. There is a development in progress at Killams which is kind of near but shouldn't impact stuff in those villages I've mentioned.
What type of house are you looking for? Do you want land and space or cottage and quaint? Rent or buy - what sort of budget do you have in mind? All houses in these areas are high end for Taunton in terms of money per square foot.
The agent that is most active in the area is Robert Cooney, he is the 'go to' as he is local and seems to get most of the instructions in the area.
Happy to help if you need any further specifics - I know the area really well.
Agreed on all points. We're in Galmington but right next to Queen's College - it's over our back fence! - and it's a cracking area to be in as I can walk to my office in the centre of town in less than 15 minutes or walk the other way and I'm stood in glorious fields. I'm pretty sure the houses between Comeytrowe and Trull are set to go ahead though so I'm not sure it will qualify if you're hoping to avoid 500 Bovis homes!
I prefer this side of town and if it's East Devon you're looking to get to I'd say it would work well for you. It's easy to jump on the M5 at J26 and, as you've already said, it's fun to head over the Blackdowns instead. We spend most of our free-time going that way - Sidmouth, Lyme, Exmouth etc.

Great thread, I'll keep watching , I'm hoping to move west soon and Somerset keeps drawing me. I find myself spending many days there just looking , edge of the levels I am finding nice, wedmore seems nice , also love the area around Shepton mallet although not Shepton itself , seems so run down these days , I remember it as a kid as a vibrant town with 2 railways. ( yes I'm old )
Around Shepton you might consider Oakhill , and although I'm slightly biased the medieval town of Axbridge is well worth a visit , no through traffic , great pubs and always lots going on .Happy to have a chat, as I've just done this myself (moved from SE England) and brought a house in Ilminster (rented for a bit first) but we looked at probably 20 plus properties all within a 40 minute commute to Taunton (where I'm working) covering most of the areas you are considering.
There are some really lovely places, and if you stay off the A358, there are a number of other commuter routes into Taunton.

Born and bred local, just to add my 2p.
Bear in mind pulling out on the A358 can be a ball-ache - especially at rush hour.
I'd consider adding properties along the A378 as it's traffic light controlled, and you can head East to Podimore to join the 303, or North to Bridgwater if the A358 is fubared.
You could also include from Blagdon to Buckland - that then picks up the "main" roads - the lanes off these are narrow and can take time to traverse (especially Friday nights during summer).
Durston and Lyng are on a fast road, you'll hear nutters just after last orders, and then again at 5am. Occasionally they crash. Not something that would instantly put me off, just something to bear in mind.

Personally I'd vastly prefer to be West of Taunton.
Cotford St Luke is a bit soulless but you're close to Exmoor which has some real scenery. Everything East of Taunton feels like a blank wasteland to me.
And there's no way I'd want my main local road to be either the 358 or 303. They're horrific.

So, what would be the preferred route into Taunton?
Having initially dismissed it as being too remote, I think we might re-visit the idea of somewhere to the north west like Milverton or even somewhere further west like Holcum Rogus.
We don't actually have any commitment to be near Taunton (so it's not as if we have to commute to a certain side of the town at rush hour every day). I'm just pre-empting the fact that it could be better for schools and transport links.

There is no easy way in to Taunton. I commuted in from Milverton for 8 years, tried every road in every permutation. SCC and TDBC have an avowed intention to make Taunton car unfriendly but give no viable alternatives.
The 2 areas you name come in to town on roads that are linked by Silk Mills, this road was a notorious bottle neck because of the level crossing. Having built the railway bridge so many traffic lights were added and a totally unnecessary 30 mph speed limit that the road is solid for most of the day.
If part of Taunton will be a regular destination live that side.

The tricky thing is, we don't actually know. The assumption is that Taunton would be a good hub for Mrs Chris71's job, which involves visiting a variety of schools and private students. Taunton is relatively large and relatively affluent (in parts) so it struck me as a good hunting ground for her. I'd like access to the M5 and perhaps the occasional trip to the train station. On the other hand, we don't actually have to be anywhere near Taunton. Somewhere like Ilminster or the outlying villages around Chard could work.
