It feels that There are far fewer Major hold ups around the stones these days. It’s still a problem area, but I’m sure the number of vehicles has fallen these days. They don’t need a 3 billion quid tunnel. They need to again improve what is already there. The recent improvements have helped, the closing of that junction has stopped most of the terrible accidents.
Clearly you don't live around here. The traffic rat-runs through Larkhill/Shrewton/Chitterne etc. Locals use other routes because they know the A303 will be congested. During Covid there were only a few times it would be congested but I assure you traffic volumes at peak times are back to pre-Covid and probably worse.

BTW, the A360 junction was closed 10 years ago which actually exacerbated the local traffic situation as we all now have to use alternative routes if you want to head north at that point. (or East if going London direction)

There was an RFC airfield adjacent to Stonehenge a hundred years ago and at the time it was suggested at the time that the stones should be removed as they were a hazard to pilots!

tbf, the stones weren't quite as old back then. ; )

This is the biggest vanity project yet, utter bullst and a complete waste of money. Why bother going through the objection process when we known fine well that the tt in Westminster will just ignore it?
We're threatened with pylons and wind turbines marching through a beautiful bit of Wales and we're going through the same process, but what's the point? It's all for show.

You, too, don't live around here. HS2 is the biggest vanity project. This is not a vanity project; it is essential. Having said that I'd settle for a hedge/woodland/fence that screened the view of the stones so folk focussed on driving along the road and not gawp at them.

Until quite recently I did live around there. I'm not interested in a vanity project league table. I've been saying all along that a screen will achieve the objective at a fraction of the cost of this nonsense. You seem confused as to whether it's essential or not. I'm in no doubt that it isn't.

Yeah but a lot less people are dying at that junction now.

Or perhaps you just don’t care about that? It was a stupid junction and at certain times of the day I’m drivers were blinded by the sun there as well as people gawping at the stones.

What's the argument against just planting some conifers or something near the road to block the view?

Isnt the plan to bypass the village to the west of Stonehenge at the same time?

There isn't one, it worked/works perfectly further east on the A303 where they did this exact thing to hide Thruxton race circuit!

If they remove/sort out Longbarrow roundabout with either an underpass/overpass for the A360 the traffic will not be held up causing most of the delays, but I guess this is to cheap and simple rolleyes

Could it be because a tree screen won't generate lots of lovely juicy building contracts for Tory supporters? Just a theory.

It was indeed a dangerous junction and AFAIK there have been zero casualties there since because there is zero traffic on that (now blocked-off) road. More than one foreign visitor was killed there when the road was open as a result of not looking the right way when crossing the road to the car/coach park.

Common sense is sorely needed to stop this madness.
