I noticed earlier this week that the Tesco in Brislington (or very near to there) had changed its Super Unleaded from 99 ron back to 97 ron.
Anyone know why & will 99 ron return?

Probably not hitting the sales hurdle. If a product doesn't sell well enough they take it out - simple. You could try putting a comment in at customer services. If sales are marginal a request can sometimes swing it in your favour.

Its better than that. The manager of the filling station told me it never was 99ron and the pumps were wrongly labelled. An email to Tesco asking if that is correct got ignored..........

So, did any of you notice your car performing better on the non-99ron? I wonder if it had a placebo effect, in the same way as the car always seeming a little bit faster when newly polished.

the tesco store in winterbourne high street keeps it

wasn't at all impressed with 99 myself, although realise it depends entirely on how your car is set up to run it

my personal order of pref is Ultimate, Optimax and, if you must, 99

Yeah the debate will rage eternally on this (except the 'wrongly labelled' one - christ, that's classic!)

Placebo effect, absolute bolox, scientific fact, mechanical impossibility will all be strongly voiced and believed in equal amounts

Personally, I have a new Elise 111R and use Ultimate / Optimax / Excelleum everytime... not that I believe any performance gain, but there is a strong view on an extra economy return justfying the extra cost per litre. I buy into that... and also, only the best for my new baby!

I didn't conduct any scientific tests, not even an mpg calculation, in the HSV. However I didn't notice any difference performance wise between the Tesco 99 (or was it 97) & Shell Optimax.
I only started using Tesco's when Optimax was hard to find for a while after the distillery fire.
The HSV has died now (written off by a lying toad of a van driver), the Saab 9-5 Aero seems to run better on Optimax than the Tesco fuel. Probably as it has c.260bhp rather than the HSV's c.540bhp it's easier to notice!
What a scam if we were buying 97 not 99. Trade descriptions etc.

cooor blimey bet that was rapid!!!!!!!

need to fill up tomorro so will try the tescos 99. ive only ever put optimax/ultimate in my cup since ive had it!
seems to run smoother on idle on optimax than the ultimate and my mate runs his on 'normal' petrol and his doesnt run as smooth as mine! he's a tight wad so wont pay the extra 5p a litre for optimax!

It was built as a press/demo car for the short lived HSV(UK), I traded my first HSV GTS (VT) in for it in 2001.
Autocar timed it at 0-60mph 4.6 secs. 0-100mph 10.0 secs. I further "improved " it, though I doubt the 0-60 time was any quicker, as that was down to traction not bhp/torque.
Where it was really quick was 100-160mph. Lots of "quick" cars slow significantly at these speeds but the HSV kept on charging until it hit the aerodynamic "brick wall".
I miss it!

Slightly aside, more & more Tescos are now stocking 97RON ,which is better than nothing-I suppose, even my local in Norton Radstock has it. I have been sticking with Optimax as it seems to suit my engine better than BP Ultimate.
