To be fair to the show this is the inaugural event so I don't think anyone knows 100% for sure what it will be like. The original Queen Square event got some bad press and certain attendees antics left a bit to be desired in recent months so many of the classic car guys now no longer attend (ironic and a shame being as it is actually their event that they started!)

It had become a bit 'hijacked' by non classic car types (or chavs as some would have an element of them called) and I think maybe the Spirit of Queen Square event could go either way in terms of the behaviour and types of cars/people that may or may not attend. I say go along and judge for yourself - then let us all know via this forum!

The regular 2nd Sunday of the month Queen Square event these days is a mix of classic cars (the Avenue Drivers Club who started the whole thing off) and more regular cars, kit cars, 'boy racer mobiles' and 'souped up' stuff who kind of belong more to the Facebook Breakfast Club crowd (this is as I see it, you can form your own opinons)

I still like to go once in a while as I see nowt wrong with seeing modern supercars alongside classics, kit cars and 1990's Fords etc but I do wish people would show more respect and not rev the hell out of their engines and drive around like boy racers, contrary to popular belief there ARE residential dwellings there and it IS a Sunday morning! Plus no one is really impressed guys, we have seen cars like your before ya know!! The usual comments I hear when it happens is 'who is that dhead' You are not popular when you behave like that!!

Ok end of lecture (I await the torrent of opinon/abuse now rolleyes (it's ok go ahead - I don't really care!)

Isn't the event being run by the people that run the Queen Square Breakfast Club though, rather than the ADC ? I originally emailed the chap that runs the ADC before I went in my car (mildly modded 2005 New Beetle Cab) as I thought it would be a bit out of place, but he was fine with it. Trouble is since then, as you say, it has attracted a different element.
I like the mix of cars there though and the way people from supposedly different "scenes" all get along over a coffee and bacon butty. I stopped doing VW shows due to the cliquey-ness and the endless sea of cars on air ride and the latest scene wheels. Seeing rods next to new Ferrari's while walking the dog round a nice scenic city square makes a nice change.
There are very few people actually living on Queen Square itself, but the flats on the adjoining roads aren't cheap and with the tall buildings the sound does echo around there quite badly. Idiots bouncing their cars off the rev limiter and wheel spinning through the crowds do not help with keeping the event going.

I suspect you are correct, I am 99% sure it is NOT being organised by the ADC (Tony) - I have it on good authority they have other plans for their future meets.

Spot on. You can hear the cars for quite a distance in fact when they rev the nuts off them. Concrete, brick and tarmac add to the effect, couple that with a very quiet city with low Sunday ambient noise and you have a recipe for getting kicked off the Square!

Did anyone go to the WSM meet last weekend ? The usual meet is this Sunday if I have my dates right

It amuses me how everyone is a photographer at the Queens Square meet these days. 200+ shots from a lying-on-the-floor angle and a watermark doesn't necessarily make for a good photo.

Someone did have a drone a while back, that was quite cool though.

Mention has been made under the thread 'New to Bristol', of an new or alternative meeting of a more 'controlled' meeting. Of late, I have been deterred from attending the very popular Queen Square meet in view of the increasing number of modern car clubs and lorries in attendance, my own preference being older cars, anything pre '90s, accepting that all cars are welcome. Does anyone have any information on this alleged new event?

Your best bet would be to email Tony Taylor at the ADC (tony@avenuedriversclub.co.uk) and ask him I think. I seem to recall reading about them doing an evening meeting but sadly I can't recall where I saw that.

Thanks F1 ASBO: - reluctant to contact Tony as he must get inundated with emails so will keep an eye out on the PH forum to see if an 'additional controlled' event happens. Have been going to Queen Square since 2010 and enjoy seeing such great cars, whether it's a cherished Ford Anglia 105E, or a '70's Alfa, and it's always interesting talking to other owners about their cars.

Surely the whole point of a controlled event would be that it wouldn't be publically advertised on here or the Facebook page as then it will simply atttract exactly the same crowd and numbers as the current Sunday meets currently do?

It has a Facebook page 'Spirit of Queen Square - The Big Meet'

I'm confused. Surely the Big Meet happened in September already?

I assume the chap above is suggesting a controlled classic cars only meet, more in the actual spirit of the ADC meets as they were a few years back, is on the cards or being discussed?

I'm pretty sure that has nowt to do with the ADC or Tony tbh.

Yes I think you are correct on both counts

I will try and find out more info about any 'newer' non-Queen Square events the ADC may or may not be planning to hold in the near future

Square was pretty busy today, lots of people parked off on the site streets and the like. Probably thanks to the nice weather. There was a strange incident mid morning it seemed like some plonker in a red van decided to intentionally block the road half way around the square and wouldn't move. In the end it looks like the police came and moved him on but not sure what was going on there and it caused a huge queue.

Tend to agree with the comments above as well, I like the mix of cars but i'm perhaps on the younger side at mid 30s. The 90s fords and stuff are 'from my youth' but also like to see the older stuff and the American stuff as well. Also agree the plonkers who are mostly if not exclusively in modern cars revving their engines as they drive around are an unnecessary nuisance. But then as a modern car driver myself I'd like us to not all be tarred with the same brush please smile

I was in the queue behind the red van,( blue Maserati), apparently he has a booked space in which he parks to go to work, as there is nowhere else, so got to feel a bit sorry for him, as no one should have there livelihood disrupted through no fault of there own, other than that was impressed with the array of vehicles on display, not all to everyone`s taste, but each to there own.

Really amazing and interesting selection of cars there this morning and some genuinely beautifully looked after, restored and loved things. Very few things there I wouldn't happily have gone for a drive in.

But, that meet just seems to have totally outgrown the Square now really. There were some lovely cars parked in all the side streets and even mud dock carpark etc that couldn't fit in and at times it was just gridlocked all around.

Also seemed to me that the only people revving and seeking attention were a few Honda owners and the odd golf or other hatch. Maybe they felt insecure in amongst all those V8s and classics. Who knows.

Perhaps the new meet should move out elsewhere and leave the Square to the classics. They do somewhat fit the backdrop better than the more modern stuff anyway.

I went along on Sunday and it was packed!
Biggest turnout I've seen in a long time, if not ever.
Appeared to be fairly chilled except there was a bit of revving going on (d1ckheads) which will only put further pressure on the event from the locals.
Some fairly imaginative parking going on too.
Can't help thinking the event has totally outgrown the square and will eventually be a victim of it's own success?

Watch this space.......
