I'm pretty sure I am not going mad but there used to be an old (50's?) petrol station nesteled inbetween some houses in the Ferring area of Sussex. I cannot for the life of me find it again.

It's ona residential road, has a fence out the front but had the old pumps there too.
Does anyone here know where it is? Google isn't being too helpful either

You're not thinking of what is now 'Sussex Cars' at East Preston are you? It used to be John Cooper Minis.

No it's a proper little place, been out of action for decades but rumour has it it still has all the sinage and bits from the 50's in it.

Yep the old garage 'art deco' take it thats the one? is still there. its in east preston. go down sea road to you reach some shops ,think its manor road. the garage was cleared of all the items a couple of years ago and is now in the first phase of being converted in flats (keeping the look of the garage and the old pumps). different old cars, old motorbikes still in packing crates and even a steam engine where still inside when the garage and land around where cleared.

I think that'd be quite a cool place to live. It looks like someone dropped a slice of mid-50's Americana into East Preston. biggrin

Thanks for that - it's been bugging me for ages, walkign round south Ferring looking for it. Clearly in the wrong part of town!

I heard a rumour years ago that there were cars etc still inside but took them with a pinch of salt - Sad that it's being destroyed/turned into flats though. Id have loved to keep it looking like it was and live in it!

I read somewhere that there was a car (singular) on a ramp in there.

It is a listed building apparently and the frontage (with pumps maybe) is to be retained.

If you look halfway down the page there's an artist's impression of the finished development - complete with pumps.

Work is well underway.

There were lots of cars inside and traction engines outside. It was owned by a local eccentric.

Some more info wink The garage was owned for many years by the Lillywhite family until the early 1960s.

"This unique 1930s Grade II Listed building gradually ran into disrepair when Mr Lillywhite passed away and it has stood empty until it was acquired by Globe Estates. Reginald Lillywhite was a real character who often cycled around the village in his plus fours and monocle. Villagers may recall an array of motor vehicles on the forecourt – from Rolls Royces to Steam Rollers [cleared in recent times]. The garage even had a small nursery to the rear".

It is now being creatively redeveloped into eight luxury homes to bring true styling of the art moderne era, retaining the existing Grade II Listed façade, refurbishing the pumps with their glass domes [found inside the garage] and incorporating many other period features. Both the single and two storey properties have two bedrooms, private terraces, landscaped communal gardens and private parking. This exclusive development will be finished to the highest specification. For further information, details for open days and viewings please contact sole agents
