I was brought up in Brighton, but moved east ten years ago. Pubs and night-life are still great and the only thing I still visit for.

Shopping for me is a waste of time as I nearly always come back empty-handed.

I really resent the mess the councils (esp the current one) have made of the road network in the last 20 years - buses-only streets (Western Road and North Street), the 20mph zone and now the bus lane corridors on the coast road and Preston Road. Lewes Road is a b*****y mess now, looks like something a idiot has come up with - a right hash.

I catch the train in for drinks in the evening with friends, but I will never return there to live.

I know what you mean about the council, a bunch of left wing anarchists hell bent on banning the motor car.

They're a bunch of feckless Greens. Give it 18 months & they'll be a distant memory.

Lets hope so, If these pillocks get in again due to some silly protest vote from the unwashed studenty types then Brighton could be in trouble.

Welcome! You'll be very close to us, and another PHer who I haven't met but know lives round the corner (not a stalker - saw pics he posted and got chatting and worked it out!)

I love it here. Moved from London 13 years ago now and have never tired of it. It's the sort of place people just 'end up' and stay because they love it smile I find it interesting as it's always evolving, and I find the community of people very friendly and open minded (except the sodding car hating Green tossers, but you can't have everything!).

You can have a really nice quality of life here. It's only an hour from London (which is also a bonus) but so very far removed. Going for a mid week sunset beer on the beach in summer is the ultimate in feeling like you gotten away from it all.

Sounds like you know the place pretty well already, but if you need anything or want local info just yell. Other PHers here will confirm I'm not a completely raving weirdo, I think hehe

Lancing ain't so bad. Bits of it anyway. North of the A27 is nice, as is away from the A259 & the industrial estate.

Sadly too much traffic most of the time, though nothing stops you getting up at 4am to explore.

OP, head west towards Petworth, Midhurst and Goodwood (my favourite from East Lavant to South Harting B2141 northbound), or head east towards Lewes, Blackboys, Heathfield and beyond (my favourite B2096 near Battle then head west towards Heathfield).

Or staying local and head to A23 BP garage then Mill Road then Devil’s Dyke. Again, one would have to get up early cos there is hardly any overtaking opportunity there.

My amusement was at selling a Northerner the idea of "cracking roads" around Brighton. Like telling someone from the sunshine coast of Australia how they will marvel the beaches at West Wittering.

As a thoroughbred Southerner who has lived in the Midlands and the North, the roads aren't something I would be wax lyrical about down South (nor the mountain biking by comparison either). Yes, the Brighton culture, the watersports, the accessibility to London, the ease of getting to the continent and, beyond all else, the marvellous weather which is akin to emigration to foreign lands.....but the roads are congested, generally craply surfaced and not all that great in general. The very fact we can name the "cracking" roads and as PHers all nod in universal agreement indicates that they are few and far between.

One "attribute" I wouldn't sell the South on is fun roads for petrolheads.
