I'm a thoroughbred Northerner and yes it's true the roads up here are fabulous and i suspect a lot lot better than darn sarf.

Before I knew the area I dismissed Brighton as just a seaside town. It was only when I explored a little bit of what Sussex has to offer did I realise that the area idea have some great roads. Yes ok maybe not as good as oop north but lets not totally dimiss what Sussex has to offer.

I'll be heading back every 6 weeks or so, so if I want to head out I've always that option.

I will miss the roads and the friendliness of the north even more but let's face it, Brighton ain't such a bad place to live.

I'm just packing up the last of my stuff now ready for the big drive down with a van load on Saturday.

My amusement was at selling a Northerner the idea of "cracking roads" around Brighton. Like telling someone from the sunshine coast of Australia how they will marvel the beaches at West Wittering.

As a thoroughbred Southerner who has lived in the Midlands and the North, the roads aren't something I would be wax lyrical about down South (nor the mountain biking by comparison either). Yes, the Brighton culture, the watersports, the accessibility to London, the ease of getting to the continent and, beyond all else, the marvellous weather which is akin to emigration to foreign lands.....but the roads are congested, generally craply surfaced and not all that great in general. The very fact we can name the "cracking" roads and as PHers all nod in universal agreement indicates that they are few and far between.

One "attribute" I wouldn't sell the South on is fun roads for petrolheads.
True true.

I love Brighton for all the reasons highlighted above. Ignoring the house prices I couldn't think of anywhere in England that I would prefer residing more.

OTOH, things I don't miss include the endless hen & stag do's every weekend. The resulting where do you live? question from every bouncer at every bar, in turn leading to the feeling that your town isn't yours, the transient population, the druggies everywhere, the petty criminality & the general feeling that you're in Logan's Run. I.e. after the age of 35 you're not really wanted.

I love the place, but after ten years, I was done wit it.

A PH welcoming piss up sounds good smile

I'm another lancing lad, but did live in the centre of Brighton for 18 months or so a few years back.
It's a special place. Many happy memories of summers on the beach, nights on the town smile

I don't wear hats really, they don't suit me. I could send you some ear plugs though?

Well I'm down.

No chips and gravy or kebabs on Nan

or shock horror 'Pound Bakery'

Anyway seriously, a massive culture shock awaits me even though it has been my second home for years now.

I'm working for my existing company from home which is great but to be honest i'm not sure if this will work long term so I am thinking of sending my CV and a cover letter out to a few companies.

I am a buyer by trade and in electronics/manufacturing ao i am wondering if anyone knows of any similar sort of companies in the Brighton/Worthing area where I can pop my CV off to?

Thanks again chaps.

Cheers.

I've got a mate lives in central Brighton whom I visited weekend before last. It is a great place for a night out, I love it.

But it is not a great place to visit if you don't have parking organised. Luckily my mate has access to what I am fairly sure is one of the safest car parks in town, albeit with very tight spaces. Not good when you drive a car with the turning circle of the Titanic.

Thanks for the companies to approach, I've seen another in Lewes but it is only small and i'm not sure I want to work for another small company.

Whilst Brighton hasn't a shortage of pubs i've been struggling to find a decent pub in close proximity to have a drink but last week I think I've found one.

The Preston Park Tavern is very nice and seems (for Brighton) quite reasonable and only a 10 minute walk from my house.

Food looks top rate.

Welcome to the south. I know we don't have decent kebabs with naan, but as you're on fiveways the bakery called ravens does good bread, and barsfield butchers is good. You chose a good spot to live. You've found a couple of decent pubs already. Within strolling distance you've got two pubs by London Rd station, the signalman and the open house. Signalman is a bit more of a proper pub and has music on at times, open house has a nice outside space, very busy (studenty)in the summer and the food is average.

The real choice of pubs is in town, and all the decent food, although on fiveways the chameleoon does good thai.

Thanks for the pointers. We go to the butchers for our meat for Xmas and it does a roaring trade. Last year the queue was up the road and a girl from the cafe came up the queue and dished out free mince pies. I love the community feel round Fiveways.

Saying that she popped back and must have sold 30-40 coffees at 2 quid a pop to all those punters who wanted a drink to wash down those free mince pies.

Fair play to them.

Sorry I know this is last minute but a pal has come down to visit his gf and wants a booze round Brighton.

Can anyone recommend some decent watering holes in the centre of Brighton

I've only really been round the Lanes and West Street doesn't interest me as it seems as Brightons equivalent of Deansgate in Manchester.

Bear in mind we're 40 not 20 anymore so can't be doing with kids fighting or moronic bouncers.

Thanks in advance.

Cheers.

Schlep up the north laines, few good boozers just around the theatres. The my hotel bar is ok & if you want to keep away from the tourists altogether, I'd head for Southover street in Hanover. Start at the top & work your way down.
