It's supposed to be one of the biggest events in the world, or so I've heard.

lewesbonfirecelebrations.com

It looks like they take this pretty seriously. Burning effigies and crosses etc.

Has anyone from there, or travelled to see it?

It's not for the claustrophobic, that's for sure! You will be shoulder to shoulder everywhere you go. The pubs will be rammed and people throw fireworks around as if elf and safety didn't exist.

There are 2 processions including a topically-themed float, a tar barrel is thrown off a bridge, there are floats, processions of local bonfire societies carrying burning torches and finally several simultaneous firework displays. It pays to plan this one so you can be sure not to miss anything.

Best way in is by train.

Have fun!

ETA they don't like the pope much either ;-)

It's an experience. The bonfire socs spend all year preparing. It will be noisy, it will be busy.
I often go to Badge Night which is great fun. It's basically a load of people throwing fireworks around while drunk. Anywhere else in the UK and there would have armed police involved. It's generally well natured but occasionally one or two of Lewes' more inbred faction take it upon themselves to throw bangers into crowds of drinkers outside the pubs.

....and under any cars that stray into range* The startle response from the occupants is always a laugh!

  • I would never do this!
