All,

Potentially angling for a job just off Goodge street in London and in need of some advice regarding places to live to commute in. Euston, charing cross, waterloo would all be viable stations to start from based on quick tube rides, or short walks.

Previously born and bred in Winchester but have had some time away working up north for the best part of 10 years and not sure where to return back to. I used to commute into london from winchester, and the car park back then was horrific as well as overpriced (unsure if anyone can comment on if this is still the case?).

Is there any advice on places to live? Hampshire Surrey etc? I would love to return to the Solent area again.

Nothing more than an hour on the train, and nothing more than a quick 10-15 minute drive with easy to park options.

Thanks in advance.

How much can you afford to pay for a house/rent as thats likely to be the deciding factor.

For 1hr on the train (to Waterloo on SWT) you are looking at up to no further than Winchester on the Bournemouth line and Petersfield(ish) on the Portsmouth line. All prime commuting areas with prices to match.

AFAIK Winchester has had changes to the car park so may be better but when I go to London its from the Eastleigh area (further south) so dont know if its any better or not.

You don't state a budget but as mentioned, Winchester housing is very expensive. You would get more for your money in Eastleigh and might not even have to drive/park as there's plenty of housing in walking distance. It's about 1.10 on the fast trains. Eastleigh has improved a lot in the last few years and has had a fair bit spent improving the area along with decent transport links. If it's too much time on the train and Winch too expensive, you'd be looking at Basingstoke which is circa 45 mins from Waterloo.

How about living round West End, and training in from Parkway ? All the fast ones stop at Parkway, and the parking there is great since the multi story went in. I regularly commute from Bournemouth, with is 2 hrs. I still get in quicker, and pay less for the season ticket than colleagues around Amersham way !

Rent would be £1000-1500 a month. Parkway is not a bad shout based on motorway access and parking.
