I don't know the areas that well but we are looking to relocate and would be grateful for some PH advice..

OH's family are in/around Southampton and we're considering a move nearer them.

I work in London and want to get the train in, happy with an hour or so to Waterloo (as long as I'm guaranteed a seat!)

Ideally 4 beds, garden, parking, not too far from a station, budget approx 550-600k.

Winchester is a nice distance from relatives but I'm aware it's an expensive area..
TIA

We're pretty open to a town or countryside setting really; if I had to choose, I'd prefer a small market town with shops/restaurants nearby

Eastleigh has the best links but doesn't have many nice places (IMHO) - depends if you are willing to drive to a station. I'm biased but Romsey is a great little market town but the train would take almost two hours!

As you've spotted Winchester costs a fortune...

Alternative is more north Hampshire - Andover and surrounding areas, don't know much about it but quicker train trips.

We`ve just moved to Old Alresford, which is ~7 miles from Winchester Station, however its almost all dual carriageway and fairly "free flowing" at most times (As my speed awareness course attendance will testify.. laugh)

Its pretty pricey, but there are a few houses within budget (just!) Decent New-ish build stuff tends to go quickly. Anything in Old Alresford will be on oil or calor gas, and private drainage. These tend to hang around a bit longer.

As always if you can add 50% there are some stunning places!

New Alresford is a Georgian market town, has a decent range of shops and pubs, and a steam railway. Lots going on over the year, festivals, fayres, etc.

Pretty much this - a lot will hang on whether the OP wants to walk, cycle or drive to a station.

If it's just walking, then the choices of finding anything close to Southampton are a bit limited. Examples:

Brockenhurst - lovely setting, New Forest, although very busy in the summer and nearer 2 hours to Waterloo.

Southampton - I wouldn't want to live in the city (apologies to anyone who does.. wink).

Eastleigh (for Parkway) - some very nice places within a couple of miles (ie Chilworth), but nothing really in that price bracket within convenient walking distance, expensive parking.

Shawford - very nice surroundings (although the M3 might be a bit noisy at some properties), few pubs within walking distance (including Twyford), bit pricey, not really any shops to speak of.

Don't mind driving to a station - provided there are spaces in the morning peaks and it's not a big fight every morning - although not having to would be lovely.

New Forest area (Romsey etc) probably just a bit too far on the train, as lovely as the area is.

Thanks for suggestions so far, keep them coming!

Winchester?
How does it pan out with the fast / semi fast services?

Am in Andover, which is just an hour from Waterloo with trains every half hour.

You would get a really nice house for 550-600k. The town itself is a bit '50p-£1' as someone local put it, but it depends what you want. Countryside is 10 mins in any direction. Its in the middle of Salisbury/Basingstoke/Southampton/Reading....plus, there are some great roads in the area

Winchester is your last chance for a seat but not guaranteed. Good fast service to Waterloo though.
House prices in Winchester very expensive.

Question is how close to the OH's family do you want to get? As others have pointed out options in budget are limited to be close to a 1hr commute to London.

I agree that a des res in Southampton/Eastliegh within easy reach of a station is probably out of budget, Winchester definitely! Moving to somewhere within easy drive of Salisbury/Grateley/Whitchurch on the SW line gives you the commute time and a +/-30 minute drive to Southampton (depending on which area of So'ton).

PS: I speak as an ex-So'ton boy who wouldn't go back and now live in rural Wilts (but a 2hr commute to London)

What about Salisbury ? 1:30 or so to waterloo, half hour drive down to Southampton, you might find something in a village nearby ?

As people have suggested Romsey/Chilworth or go north to Winchester. You could look at the areas surrounding Alton (under 1:30 to waterloo) - Bordon and all the villages around there. Bit further from the relatives though as you need to go A31/M3/M27. The town is a bit rubbish though.

Don't know the area well but what about around Chichester ? easy to get to Southampton from there, again 1:30 or so from Waterloo. Always seems quite nice when away from the centre to me but no idea of house prices.

I'm in the old part of Bishopstoke, it's nice and quiet, walking distance to Eastleigh station.

Houses are much cheaper than Shawford or Twyford as we are technically in Eastleigh, not Winchester.

Eastleigh is gradually getting more upmarket, a good cinema, a few reasonable place to eat, and an M&S food opening later this year.

Pubs are a bit ropey in Eastleigh, but we usually go to Otterbourne or Hursley.

Let me know of you want any more info.

Try the area bounded by Hill Lane, the A35 and St. James's Road on this map. Southampton station is just to the South, about 15 minutes walk.

Houses to the East and South east of the municipal golf course are also nice, but it's a longer walk and the rush hour traffic isn't nice.

Chilworth is very nice, but you'll need at least twice as much money.

Go east (along the A272!) and have a look at Petersfield and its surrounding areas. (Liss, Liphook, Meon Valley and possibly Clanfield etc.)

Nothing wrong with Southampton - 15 mins extra on the train, and that budget would buy a lovely place in a nice area of town.

If you want something more countryfied - there is now a massive car park at Airport Parkway, so if you don't mind driving, that's between the two, and gets the fast trains as well.

Check out Grange Park in Hedge End, it has a station that has London trains, 2 minutes from the m27 junction 7! might be worth a look at something around here with that price range you'd find a nice house.

You'd get into a nice house in one of the villages around Basingstoke for that money. Basingstoke is 50 minutes to Waterloo but you won't get a seat. Contrary to popular opinion there are niceish places in the town itself if a fifteen minute drive before the train journey isn't OK.
