I'm after a bit of advice from fellow South Coasters, since I originally moved down South I have lived in and around the Locks Heath area

I'm now considering moving further west and have just looked at 2 properties down in Mopley, but have a couple of concerns, one is obviously Fawley and its proximity, but the other is the road in and out, I work up in London and commute in 3/4 days a week, therefore don't want to be stuck in traffic heading to Southampton Parkway

I've don't really know the areas over to the West, I just know I need to be within 20/30 minutes of the station

Any advice would be welcomed

We used to live in mopley and it's considerably longer than 30 minutes to get to southampton. You might get to Totton in 30.

Ashurst is where we are now and that is better al round for access to rail links, whilst still being away from the city.

I live in Blackfield and work in the refinery, PM me if you like, it does feel like you live at the end of a stick sometime but . Forest and solent make up for it though. Commuting wise maybe you could catch the train from Brockenhurst instead, easy to get to and runs into Waterloo you'll get a seat as most people get on at Southampton.

I lived in Hythe and then Blackfield for ~10 years and the A326 does grind you down after a while! You can avoid it and head through the forest and come out on the A35, but its still technically a 40 limit.. (30 in one part) Its realistically about 25 mins to get either to the edge of Southampton or onto the M27. Seems like more though, haha.

Its a great location being 2miles from the sea and Calshot and walkable into the forest, or the Cadland estate. I really miss walking the dog here as you can walk for miles and not see another person!

You cant really see Fawley Refinery from Mopley, you do get wafts of petrolly type smell, but this seemed to be rare down that end, and more of an issue in Holbury and Hythe (the wind tends to blow from the sea up to Southampton)
You will hear it at night (not sure what they do then, that they dont during the day, I`m sure BoostedCerb can probably elaborate) when outside, its a sort of quiet rumbly type noise.

The secondary schools (if thats concern) are not that great, Noadswood and Orchard are Ok-ish, but you are outside of the catchment down that end, so its a risk. Blackfield primary is surprisingly good.

Oh, yes, you could potentially get the train from Beaulieu Road station, which is a *much* nicer drive, though probably limited number of trains that stop!

I'm a Control Systems Engineer so get to go round all the whole site.

Occasionally hear the refinery at night if the wind is north easterly. It's a continuos background hum which you can't hear with windows shut.

A326 is the biggest problem,, takes about 25min to get to M27 with normal traffic, Dolittle moved over here a while ago so his thoughts are probably more relevant than mine, I've lived here all my life.

Thanks for all the replies, seems like the road may be a bit of a pain, but living in Titchfield I get stuck on the M27 most days! I usually ride a bike to the station so hoping I can cut a bit of time off the journey to the station

I'm having a second viewing on Friday and will make a decision then

Thanks again

We moved to Langley which is very near Mopley a year ago. We can't see Fawley at all, and so far have never heard or smelt it. The road in and out can be a pain if you travel at the usual rush hour times which we don't. My wife travels to Salisbury daily (Before rush hour out, and after rush hour in.) and to London fairly frequently via Parkway. Never had any problems so far. We send our son to Orchard Infants rather than Blackfield as it has a nicer feel to it and a better offstead rating, (Excellent compared to just good). The area is really nice and quiet, some nice roads, beach, forests etc. The only thing lacking is a decent pub, there is the Langley Tavern, but that seems to be over run by youngsters and a bit noisy, which is a shame because its a short walk away. We moved here from Whiteley, just wish we had come here years ago. I would highly recommend the area south of Blackfield.

Thanks, how long does it take your wife to get to Parkway, I usually try and aim for the 7.38 and still need to leave Titchfield at around 7am due to the congestion on the M27 (and that's on the motorbike) I'm hoping Mopley will be a similar overall time as the M27 going east bound tends to have less issues

She leaves at 6.45am to get that train. It's half an hour door to door, but then you have to park etc.

I moved from Hedge End and eventually found a place in Dibden Purlieu. About 15 mins to the M27 and a nice compromise if you don't want to be a bit further down south.

Agreed, i am also in Dibden Purlieu, it's a good area (generally). Forest on your doorstep, 10 min drive to the beach, Blackfield is a bit too far down the A326 for me.

Great in theory, ste in practice.

I live near Applemore and I'm happy with that. I've lived up in Holbury and feel its a bit far up now, but I've also lived in Marchwood and that was crap. Applemore/Dibden give you the best of both worlds. Half a mile and I'm out in the forest walking the dogs or riding the bike, but its only 20 mins on the bypass to town (on a good day).

The biggest downside is the A326. Its a crap road. I ride to work daily now as I cannot stand sitting in traffic. I work near the football stadium and it takes 40 mins to ride, the same time as driving.
