You're more likely to get snarled up at Poulner on the A31 than you are on the A338, IMHO.
I've driven the Spur Road four or five times in the past month. Every time it's been moving at or around 40mph (average speed cameras) - really haven't been held up at all.
Once, I came out of Bournemouth on the Christchurch Road purely for a change, but this took an age to get to Lyndhurst, and then another age to get through Lyndhurst. Unless the A338 is major log jammed, I shan't be doing that again.

Couple of interesting updates & schedules

Yes, we are on programme to finish phase one and reopen the A338 to four lanes the week starting 14 December.
When the four lanes are back in action the 40mph speed limit will remain in place for your safety – the central reserve barrier will still have gaps for the crossovers and works access points. The southbound carriageway will also be running narrow lanes with studs rather than the final white lines.
Then on 3rd January!

Deep joy. Phase 2 starts on the 4th of Jan. No access southbound from the north or west. You have to do a U-turn in Ringwood. It doesn't help that the primary school journalists mix up their east and west in the headline either.

Traffic joining from the Ringwood slip road creates a bottleneck at the best of times - is that seriously the official diversion? The Verwood/Matchams junction would avoid the Ringwood congestion but has been discounted for some reason? I suppose it isn't as free flowing as it isn't a roundabout.
Im so not looking forward to going back into Bournemouth tomorrow and Tuesday.
They do seem to be taking there time on this, mind you its nit as bad as the roundabout construction off the M3 near j6 which is a true career project for the contractors involved, its probably been a couple of years so far that they have been buggering about with it.

Well, thank god thats over.
In further news, the Chapel Gate junction and improvements etc have been put on hold for the time being, whilst they make sure they have got the design correct.
And the remainder of the A338 towards Cooper Dean will have three lanes, however no start date.
Enjoy!

Personal opinion:
Thouggt it went really smoothly to be honest. Didn't feel like a long 9 months. They appeared to have done a very thorough job of it too. To compensate for the delay going to and from work I simply shifted my opening hours left by half an hour.
It's rare say this about road works, but..... good job done guys.
