Yeah, but regular trips to the continent as well as an enjoyment of driving rule that one out.

I have accepted that stuff costs what it does in England because everything we import has to cross water, but I'm not prepared to pay IOWs further inflated day-to-day living expenses just because it has to do it twice.

Don't. Just don't. Lived there for two years. Friends don't visit because of idiotic ferry prices, Islanders hate incomers with a passion, tradesmen put up prices if you're 'foreign'; ie from The Mainland, weather is mostly fog, interspersed with heavy showers.

Had two car doors dinked on the ferry, packed together like sardines. An entirely woeful island.

It's the only place in the world where I phoned for a taxi at 18:00 on a Sunday evening to be told the driver wouldn't come out because he 'was having his tea, try again in the morning.'

Small island = big hell.

We've spent a lot of time there on the boat, moored up, and this year, while boatless been over with the car many times. We love it. Everything that is wrong on the South Coast (mostly traffic!) is vastly improved on the Island.

Everyone we've met has been lovely.

My parents moved there 2 years ago and love it. My sister is moving there too so it can't be that bad.

Just depends how you are willing to adapt to that sort of lifestyle.
