Not that Winchester isn't a nice place to live, but apparently, "One key measure was Winchester's weekly earnings which, at £824, were found to be 27% higher than the UK average of £646."

The implication is that if you live in Winchester you'll earn more, but the reality is that people live there because they already earn loads, not that they'll earn more simply by moving there.

In other news, apparently Monaco is a good place to live, due to the local average earnings...

I'm sure I read somewhere that the survey also takes into account how many restaurants, bars, coffee shops a town has. Winchester wins handsdown on that basis !!
I often wonder how you can have 6 - 8 coffee shops next to each other and they all survive. 2 new ones about to open this week. tongue out

I've lived in a village a few miles north of Winchester for 16 years. I've been into Winchester once this year, for an evening meal. I think it's been nearly 3 years since I last went shopping in the town.

I drove through Winchester on Saturday morning and noticed two more car parks have now closed (Tanner Street multistory and Barfield Close).

It's a nice area to live but the town center is off limits unless you are within walking distance.

I thought Harrogate won this accolade for umpteen successive years?

Winchester is nice enough but hugely expensive to live due to the rail link to town. It is congested and actually has a fair share of scumbags floating about. There is also an absence of decent bars outside of some nice but old pubs.

Certainly not a bad choice if you have a regular London commute but other than that I wouldn't rush to live there.

Hart district has won it the last 5 years. Which is fleet, odiham, hook, yatley and a few other places.

It's based on wages, fitness, how often you visit the doctors and a few other things.

Hart district covers quite a few military barracks so a large percentage of the population earn a good wage, have a healthy lifestyle and don't visit the local doctors and a low crime rate other than the odd drunken fight.

I always thought it was over rated when we lived there (7 years back).

Horses for courses. Been in Winchester for 10 years now and love it. Only place I'd consider moving to would be Edinburgh. I have a garage and parking and it didn't cost me anywhere near 800K.
