Average speed cameras going up on the A90

It has been confirmed that average speed cameras will be installed between Stonehaven and Dundee later this year.

It's a road I drive on a regular basis. I've never considered speeding to be that common on this road.

Not a fan of this, bloody Scottish Govt will have these on every road soon. But it hopefully will stop the s who zoom up to the current speed cameras then slam on the brakes until they are well below 70mph.

Speeding may have dropped a wee bit since the GATSO cameras were installed, but when I used to crew change out of Aberdeen, and car hire was cheap, there might have been a few occasions when the speed limit was exceeded. As it was by nearly all of the rig crew who hired a car and used that road.

Some say...that there's nothing faster than a white van, but a rental that someone else is paying for is definitely faster, especially at 3 o'clock in the morning.

I haven't driven the road in over twenty years, so maybe speeding on the A90 is now a thing of the past, but I somehow doubt it.

This is just ridiculous - casualties on that stretch of road don't justify this at all. Getting sicker of the nanny government we have every day.

I'll be tempted to take the coast road, just to avoid becoming an SNP drone. Even though it's slower.

Pretty sure accidents on this road are more to do with its ste layout and not the speed of the traffic.

That's my take on it. There's so many junctions where cars have to enter a 70mph road from a standing start. Lots of it is lorries and tractors.

Unfortunately it costs actual money to sort out junctions to make them safer, so much easier, and more cost effective (not to mention revenue generating) to just slap up average speed cameras and watch the money roll in.

Funny how a lot of the junctions between Dundee and Perth were redesigned and made safer with bridges to cross the carriageway. The campaign to sort out the Laurencekirk junction has been going since 2004 ffs.

I don't use the A90 when I'm heading south anymore. I'll take the A93 Glenshee road more entertaining and quieter especially on a weekday.

Certainly more entertaining in the winter too!

I hate the things, was driving on the A9 at the weekend in a sporty car without cruise control, which means you end up checking your speed in an almost paranoid manner.

I did think it was odd that the newly announced cameras only went as far as Stonehaven, so I am fully expecting the AWPR to be fitted with them from when it first opens. Probably on the grounds of safety, with it being a new road and it will only be there for a few months until people get used to it. Then afterwards it will be such a success they will leave the cameras in place....

I personally wouldn't be bothered if they were on the ANPR, because it's unlikely to be a speed limit breaking road anyway with all the exits off it. It's more a road to improve access to all parts of Aberdeen than for bypassing it in a hurry I would say.

The A90 is however more like an expressway for getting South/North for a lot of people.

Used to enjoy visiting Scotland.....

It's still doable but the NC500 ruined the west coast in summer, the A9 is a no-go now (I also use A93 so I expect it will get busier and attract the attention of the control freaks soon).

Even Wales is better now I think.

Also ; has anyone worked out what the speed limits should be or are we always gonna be stuck with 40 year old made up ones?

Imposing them via enforcement at danger points makes sense - along whole routes is insane and irrelevant. And dumb. And we (UK citizens) are dumb to put up with it.
