I'm currently thinking about moving to Winchester, and would like some opinions based on:

30 year old single guy with two cars.
Starting a new business run from home that requires easy access to the South coast and airports.

Is there a good social scene? Quality totty? Houses with garages that don't cost a fortune to buy/rent?

Sorry to hijack the thread but seemed like a sensible place to post.

(FMy folks live in Swindon, I spent 3 years at uni in Southampton so know the surrounding area - keen to know about the town)

Cheers

It's to keep the 'dirty little chav's' out.

WInchester is a lovely place if not a little boring at times, pubs are okay but if you ever felt the need to go to a club then a trip down to Southampton would be a must. There are some good roads, but they seem to have cottoned onto hidden speed camera vans of late.

All the house prices seem extortionate, but then where isn't in this country. If you want a garage or off street parking your best bet would be to look in the surrounding areas. Where depends on your budget and what sort of things you are into. You have quieter small villages such as Twyford, or bigger newer areas such as Colden Common (to the south), Kingsworthy (more or less attached to Winchester), or nearby towns such as Alresford.

It would be well worth popping down going into some estate agents and then having a drive around to get a better feel for the area. As I'm sure you are aware having lived in Southampton, everywhere is easy to get to from Winchester as it is right on the M3. There are also direct nonstopping trains to London Waterloo which takes just under an hour. Plus Southampton airport is a stones throw away.

Having lived in both Winchester and Southampton (and several surrounding places) I can safely say that while access from Winchester is theoretically very good, if you are going to do it by car, it can be a nightmare. M3 can be (frequently is) a virtual standstill - longest journey time from the place we had there (just off M3) into work (central Southampton) was 3.5 hours... Don't think I ever managed it in rush hour in less than 45 minutes. Outside rush hour, it's about 15 minutes.

No. It's OK, but not good. Very little (anything?!) to do past midnight if you want to make a night of it. Southampton is closest place with a club and has a much better overall nightlife in the bars

Quality, not quantity. Actually there isn't a great deal of either quality or quantity.

rofl Put it this way - we sold our 2 bed end of terrace ex council house, NO off-road parking (and an absolute nightmare on road parking) in one of the less salubrious areas 3 or 4 so years ago... for £230k. The 3 beds opposite (still with no off-road) were selling at the time for £320k+

All the above said, it's generally a nicer place to be than Southampton! (but then, I can't stand Southampton) Shopping is poor unless you are a tourist, some nice bars and pubs, only a few miles in any direction can get you into some really nice village areas.

Sadlerj, fancy finding you on here... how's the M5?! It's James from hockey by the way, with the 325i, I saw you at the hatfair on Sunday....

Trying to keep up with you down to Poole that time is still one of my favorite drives. If you are ever popping out for a blast let me know!
Hello James...M5 rocks...although something is lunched in the engine as when I really boot it in m-mode it tells me restricted performance (so only 400bhp available!) so have a nice 318D Touring whilst they check her out for me! Catch up soon
Only 400 BHP, god forbid! Hope they return it in full working order soon. Take care, I'll keep my eyes open for a fast moving 318d in the meantime!

Southampton is better is almost every way IMO.

I'd class Winchester as pretty 'quiet' - which means it has low crime etc but you can probably live in as nice an area in Southampton for less money.

The roads are cramped to say the least in the central parts.

I'm just about to start work in the County Hospital and will be living on site for the first few months. Will be good to know some nice roads to potter down. BY the sounds its a quiet area which suits me just fine.

You'll be spoilt for choice. A272 across the South Downs (routinely listed in the top UK drivers roads). Also the roads towards Salisbury / across the Test Valley, and Salisbury Plain is only a few miles away.

Try just North of Winchester, South Wonston / Sutton Scotney etc. Easy access to M3, A34, A303 etc. In Winchester or anywhere on the Southern side suffers from very heavy traffic at busy times as many commute from the South into Winchester. As always wherever you choose try being there at times you would normally travel to see the traffic levels. Personally I find our side of town good for travel & being out of Winchester houses are cheaper
