Wonder if you could help...

I am thinking about applying for a job in Wimborne Minster

I don't really know that area at all -- obviously I will be having a look at some point!

I would be looking to rent a property at first -- I have a house here in Worcs that I will be letting

Is property in Wimborne Minster very pricy -- the nearest I have been is further to the West where I recall it was!

I would be working in Wimborne so could drive in up to about 20 miles max

I'd like to be within about 30mins of the sea if possible or closer and not I'm bothered about town nightlife!

Wimborne is very pretty, not any real Chavy areas either as its centre is quite small, nightlife is just pubs, some lovely restaurants, shopping is quaint with most amenities, sainsburys very close to centre (or is it Tescos, been a while)

Traffic in & around is a nightmare as its a thorough fare for traffic from M27 > Poole.

Prices were high for Dorset some 2 years ago, not sure how the CC has effected this though.

All in all a nice choice for that area, probably the best TBO, 25 mins to the sea.

Avoid: Kinson, east Howe, west Howe, winton, Wallisdown.

Look at: Ferndown, ringwood, lythets, sturminsters & Winterbournes

It's a nice place, further north are the winterbourne villages which are rural & nice driving roads too biggrin However traffic in & south of Wimbourne is a bit of a nightmare so OK if you are within a short commute.

Very close to Poole/Bournemouth etc so handy for the beach & likely activities.

from b'mth itself you'd be looking at a 45 min commute at the normal rush period, be a nightmare TBO, better picking a closer town, ferndown is quite nice, bit fuddy duddy but nice enough & very close to wimborne.

Bare in mind B'mth centre will be very Chav come summer, beaches are better Westbourne way if wimborne side, or other side of B'mth would be Hengistbury, Mudeford, highcliffe etc

Broadstone/back of Poole? Canford Heath is a bit boxy and at risk of heath fires set off by bored oiks. Can be un-nerving to see the fire brigade putting out a heath fire at the end of your garden, closely followed by eco-types wailing about loss of habitat.

I work in the town centre of Wimborne (but live 10 miles North-ish) and its a nice place. Property still pretty pricey and seems to have fared well compared to Poole / Bournemouth (but maybe the lack of new-build in Wimborne has something to do with it?).

Just got planning for a new Waitrose on the old Cricket Pitch in the town centre which should breath some life into that end of the town centre and the Square end of Wimborne town centre is full of cafes (Costa Coffee as well and others), pubs (my office is about 10 yards away from The Oddfellows - a tiny pub which you don't see the likes of very often these days) and some good restaurants (Olive Branch, Prezzo's, 2-3 good local Italian restaurants - I sound like Tourist Information now don't I?!?) and less of the high street chain stores etc especially now that Woolworths has gone with more boutique and little gifty-type shops. Schools have good reputation (QE and Corfe Hills in nearby Broadstone) as well as several nearby private schools.

Having said all of this I think as it is pretty quiet which is probably due to the average age of East Dorset residents, it probably suits family age upwards (say 30+) as not particularly much night life but then Bournemouth only 15-20 mins away if thats your thing.........

I think it was voted the best place to live by Country Life a few years ago which tells its own story of the demographic, but perhaps the tweed wearing chaps at Savills voted for it to boost local values?

What do you do and where are you looking to work?

I'll be in the town itself - don't want to post the job details up here -- just west of the town centre

Wimborne has 13 pubs, and is an easy commute from Poole, Bournemouth or Ringwood. As a town it's really quaint and historic, but not quite a full "chocolate box" town.

Personally I think it's a really nice place to live & work, but so much depends on what you look for. As a place to live & work away from home you could do a hell of a lot worse than a lot of places I can think of.

Ignoring Luke's comment for one second smile I'm actually in Lower Parkstone/Lilliput which is about 3 miles East of Poole (halfway between Poole ad Bournemouth) It's very nice as it's close to the beaches (30 minutes walk, 5 minutes car/bike) but not so close as to get congested with tourists in Summer. Poole has some nice parts I guess (The Quay) but basically it's a bit of a grot hole in my books. If you want to be close to the sea but also in a nice area then my area, if you don;t mind being a little further out then Wimborne areas are nice.

I grew up in Ferndown and my parents still live there - it is old fogey-ville, but it is a nice pleasant place to live and has decent services, if a little devoid of character. Avoid Tricketts Cross though if considering Ferndown to live.

As for Wimborne, its a nice small market town as many have said, I would say the one (small) area you'd want to avoid might be around the industrial estate/rugby club/Flight Refueling. Pubs are good, shops are decent for the size of town and it has a good independent record shop.

If you want quiet village life, some of the villages north of Wimborne up to Cranborne area are very nice, places like Chalbury, Horton, Holt, Wimborne St Giles, the Tarrants etc.

Verwood is also quite popular with families, but has been quite overdeveloped (Barratt Home-type developments) and its infrastructure is quite stretched now.

I used to live in Wimborne, on Leigh Rd, heading out towards Merley. It was ok, as mentioned pretty quiet - not a bad to live & good for the Purbecks, New Forest & Cranborne Chase - fantastic driving roads as well - the B3078 from Wimborne to Cranborne & the B3081 to shaftsbury via Zig Zag are excellent roads..but not in the ice & snow...
I now live north west of Wimborne in a village called Sixpenny Handley & drive to Poole every day. Like wimborne but prefer the sticks.........
Driving to/through Wimborne at school run time is a pain, so if you're planning to work there you may as well live there.....

Good luck............!
