Apart from cheaper property values I can't think of a single reason for choosing Carlisle over Edinburgh personally (and I'm a Cumbrian) - especially if you're single and work off shore. Great nightlife, culture, great architecture & surrounding countryside, Edinburgh's my favourite city in the UK.

If I had to live in Carlisle I'd look in Stanwix.

Hi there... really late to this thread sorry!

Sam,

PM me with any questions you have and i'll try to help you out as much as I can.

I know Carlisle, surrounding areas, and Cumbria very well.

Alway willing to help out a PH'er!

One last thing: Brampton - absolutely rough as fk. looks nice if you drive through and has some nice houses... but believe me, it isn't somewhere I would live! If you want your head kicked in, simply visit any of the pubs in brampton of an evening and see what happens.

Horrific!

Hi I am new here sorry for intruding this page as not allowed to post yet.. newbie oops

Ok I currently live in london I have three boys, 16, 14 & 12 and secured a job in and around Carlise; was there this week and decided that is not the place I want to live.

however can anyone recommend a place or area where it will be good for me to move too?
I do not want to be too secluded or too built up as love cumbria for its views.. however I have to be realistic.. where my two youngest can travel to a secondary school easily whilst I am working 12hr shifts and for my eldest who will need to be starting college and wants to do construction/plumbing?

It will be just me the boys and a dog lol but all input good ot bad is needed from those who live in and around the area.. I am nervous as its a big move for us.. but also dont want to feel pushed out if I move to a small town where people dont like newcomers?

Thank you in advance and hope someone can help me..

Wetheral is lovely.
Great village, pub, hotel, restaurant, shop, post office, rail links to Carlisle and Newcastle.
Perfect!

This is balls.

We've lived in Brampton for 2 years now and it has it's lively bits, The Shoulder of Mutton is best avoided after 7pm. But the rest of the village is sleepy (very) after hours and the south and east sides very very sleepy.

As per usual when picking an area to live, visit it through the day, evening and on a Friday night and ask yourself, do I want to park my car and live here?

Rough as fook is this https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@53.802137,-1.524531...

not this: https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@54.942138,-2.734997...

IMHO

My apologies, I was probably a bit harsh with 'as rough as fk' but that's just based on my experiences there on meeting friends in The Nags Head and the Shoulder on an evening when they are full of drunk plasterers and bricklayers all spoiling for a fight.

The Nags has closed now thank god so that has probably improved things.

I know two couples who moved from Brampton because of various issues, however conversely I know people who live very happily in houses on Capon Tree road.

I think it's getting a lot nicer.

Whereabouts is your new place of work?

It depends what you want really, village, town etc. You say Carlisle isn't for you, but there are many villages on the outskirts or parts of the town that are really nice.

And it also depends on what your idea of good/bad is! I work with a really nice lady who moved here from Liverpool a year ago with her husband and she loves it and says she would never move back to liverpool. She says Liverpool seems really rough in comparison, yet she moved here to what I would class as not a great area, but she thinks it's marvellous.

The College in carlisle is actually really good and recently expanded and refurbished, so your eldest shouldn't be stuck for courses.

William Howard school in Brampton is probably the best Secondary school in the area for your kids, however there is Austin Friars if you want to send them somewhere private.

I will be working alongside four care homes in Carlisle, Whitehaven and another one I cannot remember where..

I would like a town to.at least go to local shops where I will be easily accepted being a newbie there.. currently looking around most areas for college at least and the schools that have been mentioned as long as my boys can get a bus to and from, as not sure how the system works..
I love the scenery but again I have to be logical..

I'm really excited, scared and dam.nervous lol as probably be moving around October not knowing anyone.. but its a gamble hence my questions and in need of a bit of suport..

Thank.you for taking the time in reply I definately will be looking more when get home

I lived in Carlisle for 3 years whilst in uni, Old brewery not sure if you would class it as center or shaddongate, right beside the castle / biscuit factory.

Thought it was a dive when I moved there, first port of call was fitting an alarm to my car as it was parked out of sight in a carpark.

Had a 10 year old chav throw a block of wood at the car down London road and had some chavs in a transit van spoiling for a fight on a night out pretty much the only issues I ever experienced there.

Night life is crap but it's an OK place, I never once didn't feel safe, and most of my time out and about was at night, although i did prefer to use the millennium bridge over the underpass, I never really ventured out of Carlisle I stayed central, to say I haven't been there for 4 years I don't see the appeal to go back, I live on the outskirts of Liverpool now and there's more on offer.

Due to the rather rapid population growth in Carlisle, there has been quite a change/improvement in the last 4 years or so.

The Devonshire Street area has seen a big change and has become the 'nice area' for food and drink for civilised people, students, mature drinkers, after work cocktails etc: Guilded Lily (Now refurbished into 'The Last Zebra), Hell Below, The thin white duke, Le Gall, McQueens, Bocata, The Halston, Concrete, The Andalusian, Moo Bar, Pizza Express, etc.

And of course there is still the whole of Botchergate if Wetherspoons, Walkabout and countess other big, loud, drunken bars and clubs are your thing, complete with thousands of intoxicated revellers.

Shops have improved and new supermarkets like Sainsburys built in parts of town that were quite down at heel (Shaddongate etc) and the areas have been improved with them.

Story Homes are well on with building upwards of 1000 new 'executive homes' around the town, and upmarket developer Charles Church had arrived and is halfway through building a big estate of 'superior executive homes' whatever that means!

DW Sports have built a really impressive new health club and spa, and other decent gyms have opened up as well.

Student population is on the increase as well.

Yes, Carlisle United are still terrible, but recently there has been a big swell in good eating and drinking establishments, shops, and development in general.

It is certainly a town on the up rather than the down like so many other unfortunate northern towns.

It is a town where you now have plenty of choice over where to eat and drink on an evening, a multi screen cinema, half decent shopping, excellent sports and recreation options, 24hr supermarkets, many gyms and health clubs, well maintained Parks, a bit of history around the place with the Castle, and yet there isn't a single part of it that you would be afraid to walk through on your own at night.

Yes there are bigger and better places to live, but it really is decent now and improving all the time, plus don't forget a 10 minute drive will have you in the countryside and only a few more minutes from the Lake District.

Like any city it obviously has its troubles. But many surrounding areas and villages are lovely wetheral being the best I can think of. But dalstons not bad and is at the west side.
Only one I can think to avoid is Longtown.

But then if you look at houses in Marlborough gardens and cavendish terrace, there as good place to live as the country IMO, very up market leafy streets overlooking cricket ground and castle walls and right near the private school etc...

For instance this house is very well priced IMO, can only guess it needs work??

Another +1 for Wetheral here if you want a very quiet rural life. If you want anything involving a city then it's definitely not where you want to be. Lived in Wetheral for 6 months and it was great with some fantastic walking and biking up and down the riverside woods, I even did the swim from Wetheral to Carlisle once but the trout ladders took a bit of a toll on me.

If you're into mountain biking then you have Dumfries & Galloway (Dalbeattie, Kirrougtree, Ae & others) within an hour and a bits drive. If you're a walker then you have quite a lot on your doorstep and the lakes are 45 mins away. If you like snowboarding then there's Yad Moss for the winter too.

We ended up moving to Leeds (Chapel Allerton) after the 6 months was up and we've found it's just as nice as Wetheral (in terms of nice looking houses, nice people and a village atmosphere) but being in a City we can also do City things like "shopping" and other things my wife thinks "we" like. rolleyes

Quite temped to have a look at that if we ever manage to sell ours.
Mrs won't entertain the idea of town living though.

Can only guess that it needs modernising at that price, I'd have thought it should start with a 4 on there. And it's not your typical town living is it?

It looks a strange layout.
The bottom floor isn't part of it.
