I didn't think it was a good as last year (which was my first one) but still a pretty enjoyable weekend, although I can see why the other posters who have been to more events think it is getting a bit samey.

I also heard of a few tent thefts and we had to stop one of our camp chairs being 'borrowed' one night. I though it was a bit strange that anyone could walk straight into the campsite from the public parking. Similarly, it was a bit odd that the car clubs were outside of the event proper. The ticket deal for car clubs (BOGOF and £20 for all nights camping IIRC) is not bad, for the reasons of not being

Contrary to other comments, I thought the Quo concert did bring a few more people in on the Friday and I would say that there were significantly more than 1500 people watching. Definitely less people than last year for the classical concert though.

I think the point about lack of passion, versus variety and trying to make it break even, or god forbid, make money, is the big deal.

The BTCC is an easy element to get there, I would think. Chris Stockton in his Chevy, is a local, but not there. And Colin Turkington was there Fri, in the Start tent, but kept a low profile, and the eBay team was nowhere to be seen.

A lad in the tent had offered to bring his Dino, and this had allegedly been turned down, but they were running the hybrid Honda rally car from ten years ago, which didn't really add up.

I love it but I think we have passed "peak Cholmondeley" which is something that is going to need to be addressed.

I've been really interested reading the comments in the thread and I think they've persuaded me to write to the organisers as they reflect how I felt about the event.

I grew up five miles away and played cricket at Cholmondeley as a kid so I've been a keen advocator of the event since its inception. It felt like it was gaining a nice momentum and developing an identity of its own. This year felt very flat. My observations specifically would be:

- Change of PR a shambles. No media pass sent out. Poor communication in the run-up to the event.
- Little interest at media sign-on. No offers of refreshments, wi-fi, timesheets or banter (as is the usual media centre fare).
- Reduced car clubs and traders - large and small.
- Fewer interesting food outlets.

I suspect the following issues might apply:

- It's pretty expensive, honestly.
- Bolesworth Horse Show was happening just down the road.
- The tall ships were in Liverpool.
- Many of the nation's car enthusiasts were at Le Mans. Or glued to the TV/computer watching it at home.
- Trade stands had gone up in price.
- It always bloody rains!

That creates a perfect storm which left the event feeling slightly flat. As a motor racing enthusiast I really enjoyed the action out on track but there needs to be more variety and some bigger names. It doesn't need to be GFoS but a few current BSB / BTCC / BGT / WRC entrants would help. It could be a terrific, sustainable event but it needs very careful management over the next few months or it'll peter out.

PS - Lawrence, I saw you on Saturday afternoon. I sadly missed Oulton but was passing near Tarporley after spending an couple of hours watching Le Mans on the telly. You blared past; car looked awesome!

I was there all weekend with the Sporting Bears. Where we raised a record, for this event, £7000 plus doing the dream rides.
So 1st big thanks to the public for donating and for the drivers and other volunteers who helped some very worthy children.

Onto the event, as part of a group that organises events it's so so easy to criticise so I'll mention some good stuff. Being busy all weekend I only had about 30 minutes to look around, but was by the side off the track all weekend. Access to the paddock has to be one of the best attractions.
The Friday rock night is a great idea, some excellent bands on with Quo being very good and if it does bring more people in earlier on Friday it could mean more track activities on the Friday.
Seeing a birdcage going full pelt down a track can never get samey neither for that matter Elfyn Evans in a rally car or a Lancia , or a Quattro or 1920's Bentley, (we had one of these doing dream rides on the road wink ) or and the list goes on and on. Seeing almost any car going flat out on a track, hearing the tyres squeal, the roar of v6's, v8's, v'12, 4 pots, dump valves, turbo, American muscle.... It's what I want.
The Hunter was very impressive, being a huge Vulcan fan this was very close to sheer noise of it.

Although the car list didn't seem as extensive as previous years there was still excellent track action.

In the north west we are crying out for a good car event CPOP can and is this..
In my mind there's a few key things that haven't helped.
Cpop started at the start of the recession.
The weather has been bad every year except this one.
Being mentioned as the Goodwood of the north probably did it no favours. Goodwood has taken years to get where it is. And now unless you get VIP tickets or invites you don't have access to the paddock.
Cpop you do.
The army display was great, but this was pulled by the army when recession hit and they couldn't justify doing the show when making soliders redundant.

It's easy to say they should get these, this or them. This and that costs money and needs to be available and at the end of the day they need to make money. I've noticed every event they do change things to improve it but unless someone with huge funding comes it will take time.

Events like this need a lot of time to evolve. As a petrolhead I want to support these sort of events even if it's just patience.
I did get the feeling they'd toned it down being that by choice or not it might not be a bad thing to try and start from scratch. It might be an event that for now won't get the numbers they want until it's well established.

Next time your at CPOP check out the dream rides, all your donation goes to the children's charity of choice and in return you get a passenger ride for 20-30 minutes on the open road in cars ranging from a 1920's Bentley super six to a modern day Bentley speed. From a latest mclaren spider to an original bodied Lola T70.

Yeah, I decided to leave Saturday evening and unplugged the tent and chucked everything into the car feeling very unhappy. The poor car got some stick on the way home!!!

I must say I generally agree - although Lawrence has kindly supplied me with an email address to send some feedback, it needs some very careful thought because just sending in yet another whiny email about what was bad about the event isn't exactly encouraging.

With the exception of the first year or two, the car club displays have always been outside the event (or outside the track), which is really what led to my earlier comment that I bet a lot of people coming in at some gates will never make it down to see us. It's a pity, but if they've gone to see the track action and look around the paddock, I could see why they might get as far as the trade stands, have a quick look in our direction and then decide not to make the walk. If they put us inside the track, it makes the arrival and departure time much less flexible as it would mean either waiting for everything to finish, or at least for a significant pause. It's certainly the case, though, that if I was prepared to just watch from the outside of the track in that area, I could have gone with a car pass and no ticket at all, as the event ticket wasn't checked until crossing the track.

I hadn't realised that the open paddock was so unusual, and if anything that makes me less likely to spend the time and money trekking down to Goodwood. I haven't been to many venues at all, just really sticking to my local area and doing Oulton and Donington, and I'm used to being able to wander around just about anywhere (obviously within reason). In fact I was surprised when I went to the first Carfest (also at Cholmondeley) that as soon as the cars started moving around at around 10am, the paddock was closed and stayed that way until 3pm. I assumed that was because it was a less car-savvy crowd who might not realise they needed to watch for moving vehicles.

Being in the paddock when all the cars were being warmed up and rolled out was the highlight of the day for me. I felt like a little kid in heaven with all the noise and smoke. Top stuff. Crowd seemed very well behaved too, making space, not too many handprints on the Ferraris etc.

Was there from 9 till about 430 and felt entertained though we did spend quite a long time geeking out over suspension designs in the paddock!

Lawrence, I think I saw your car on the Saturday, but on Italian plates?

We went out in the older Bentley Continental, was excellent. The lady driving it was cool

So why did I leave with dampened memories of something which was special. Maybe it was not as full on as previous years, maybe the Carfest provides a fuller experience, maybe the expanses of grass left open, where in previous years there had been activity, makes you think it is lesser. The track action was immense. The paddock was immense. After that, there is not much depth. Perhaps?

Anybody have a cheeky sit in any of the paddock cars?

I was passing the SLS Black series and the AMG guy was stood there with the door open and let me have a sit in it.

I didn't fit in very well, might as well cross that one off my list! frown

My plan was to get there as early as possible and just go straight to the paddock so I could have a proper look around and get a few pics before the crowds came. Then I went over to the club stands later on...thumbup

A good plan, always best to hit the paddock before the crowds get there, but if you get there too early some stuff is covered over. Can make a good photo, though - "guess what's hiding under here".

Pity you were there on the worst day weather-wise, though it was largely dry after that initial shower. Cheers for the pic.

I've been in previous years and enjoyed it a lot, but not recently.

First thing that put me off this year was hearing Status Quo were there...for anyone under 50 they are regarded as a bad joke like Des O'Connor was and for anyone under 30 they have probably never heard of them.

Prices where not cheap, and combined with negative reports and Quo (stick to a car show not a has beens rock concert) I went to a different festival instead.

Stick to the basics that make it good, encourage car clubs with good camping facilities and I'll be back smile

I’ve been to this event a few times so I had an idea of what to expect hence getting to the paddock early. I’ve missed the past couple of years though and that seems to have been enough of a gap for me to get excited about it again and attend. I enjoyed the day and I’m glad I went but can also see what you’re saying about how it somehow seemed a little “less” compared to past years. Re the weather, the initial damp made for some interesting take-offs from the start line and I was thankful not to have the opportunity to add to my molten glow forehead after standing in the sun all day last week at the Gumball thing!

This year car clubs was very well attended a little slow on the Friday but it always is, as people arrive and set up for the weekend ahead, sat turned out to be an excellent day with full attendance and everybody who said they were comming came and every pitch was full, Sunday it was a little less probably due the threat of rain and Father's Day and the fact there were a couple of other events on.
Car clubs you are supposed to be in by 8am and not supposed to leave early, This is exactly the reason why clubs is not inside the main area within the track, arrival time for the last 2 years has been flexible I have allowed late arrivals in up until 12am and so has the leaving time. Any interesting cars that are not in a club headed for the public car park have been diverted to car clubs, this year we had a wonderful selection including a new mclaren various fezzes and some lovely classics which otherwise would have been buried in the public car park.
Dom why didn't you park the Ult with clubs ? we had 3 Ults on the noble stand this year, or are we not good enough for you, At least you could have come over and said hi and discussed some ideas on how to improve things.
Nobody got in free via our gate and we are covered by security both on the campsite and car clubs at night, because I personally had the roster times and staffing levels shown to me when I went over to security to check out, after the couple of unfortunate incidents.
Overall car clubs this year was excellent every club that I spoke (all of them) were very happy with the pitch and enjoyed the event, although the beautiful weather helped, got to say how friendly everybody is on clubs which also makes the event worth while for me, along with the wonderful selection of cars, the feedback from the general public on leaving the POP when asked was "excellent event we will be back" not one person gave me a negative response, so we must be doing something right.
However I do have some new ideas myself so if Dom and anybody else have any, please get in touch with me via email as I am also very passionate about this event.
Regards Russ
Roll on 2015
PS over 3000 tickets were sold for the quo concert alone so I am sure it was closer to this figure that attended and not the speculated 1500

Thanks for the sporting bear mention, the Litchfield driver does have a medal - an MBE wink (not for SB though)
The rest of us we don't need medals we do it for the smiles on the passengers faces and the help we can give to the children's charities and a smile off them is more than worth it.

You mention carfest provides a fuller experience, which it probably does for a family and none petrol heads, but CPoP does have racing, be it against a clock, but they are racing.

Yes, good point on Carfest, and perhaps I have only the golden memories from when it was a Chol. Now combine the two!!

I know how hard the Sporting Bears is, I saw you in Liverpool ONE at it as well. Balancing giving the paying public a good time, your licence, and getting through the queues. Well done!!
