I work in Ramsbottom and live in Blackburn, only problem living Ramsbottom / Haslingden and going to Blackburn is getting off the Grane Road unless going long way around or take Haslingden old Road.

I would look at Preston and look at coming into Blackburn on Preston Old road via Hoghton or M65 rather than Preston New Road & A59

I know there is still a Liquid Club in Blackburn, there used to be a few night clubs in Blackburn during the 90s but I suppose that was a while ago! The Charles Napier is open late and has bands on, and King Georges hall attracts some good comedians and has Northern Soul nights (that are good) pretty regular although it doesn't attract the bands like it used to, I've some top bands in there, Manics, Charlatans, Stone Roses, Happy Mondays, Blur, Carter USM - the good old days, there is a legendary tale of the night that Led Zepplin played there but that was before my time.

Winckley Sq in Preston isn't a bad place to live for 6 months, parking will be an issue I guess you'll get a permit, you will hit traffic trying to get out of Preston in the morning unless you get out early, it will be bearable though if you're coming from another large city.

I'm involved with a Martial arts club that meet above an office in Winckley sq if you fancy it ;o)
Where abouts exactly?
I've lived in the Square for 4 years and never noticed one.

Re parking permits - you'd be able to get an AV1 permit which entitles you to park all around the Square. I think my wife paid £28 for hers this year.

As a Blackburn lad born and bred and now living outside it I avoid going in to town as much as I can.

The town has changed beyond all recognition over the twenty years .. It used to be a great place with the already alluded to pub runs around the town before hitting peppermint place .. Oh the days wink

Bulls head, knowles arms, hare and hounds then over revidge and into town ...

I do the Manchester commute very day and it can take over an hour easy in rush hour ... Preston is good .. Especially for a 22 year old as I always found the quality of women higher in Preston than Blackburn .. Far higher in fact as Blackburn is only just above burnley in terms of swamp donkeys .. Preston is a university city and so has 7 day a week nightlife .. But the traffic can be a pain

Personally I'd probably look somewhere in the Walton summit/South Preston area .. Very close to M6/m61/m65 interchanges and close to both Preston and Blackburn .. Virgin gym nearby along with good shops and nightlife with easy access to motorway network and you'd only be 15 mins from work at shadsworth

I'd love to recommend Whalley and ribble valley but it might be too expensive for you and too old. Great harwood isn't a bad place which seems to be on the up

But it's not really that grim up north

Not sure why but I read that to the tune of Fresh Prince of Bel Air...

Be sure to take a trip to the Strawberry Duck for your Sunday lunch. It's in Edgeworth!

Lived in the area and if Preston is viable, go there! Good night life as it goes, heads and shoulders above most local stuff. Clitheroe is local to Blackburn (other side of Blackburn to Manchester) but similar to Skipton it can be FAIRLY pricey. Clitheroe night life is a weird one though.

It just doesn't feel like a proper night out, not like going to Preston or Manchester or Liverpool does.

I think I have decided on Preston to be honest having looked at this thread and conducting a bit of research last night. Appears £500 - £600 will get me a pretty decent flat as only for myself so don't need anything too fancy!

For something to do once a month, there's also a monthly meeting here 2nd last Sunday of every month.

Good breakfast, nice people and always some nice metal to look at.

Thanks certainly will be something I attend once I move up

I am hoping I will be able to bring the MINI up as otherwise I will be stuck in my A4 which is hardly the most thrilling drove...

What is parking like in Preston? My thinking was if I got a flat with a space my mini could live there and I could just dump my Audi on the street nearby?

absolutely murder near the centre/fishergate. I had to drop some documents off for work at Winckley Square (near the centre and to avoid paying for parking (it's nearly all pay and display short term) i had to park about half a mile away and walk.

having said that, I'm not sure what parking is like on the outskirts near housing, i know near the centre there's permit only spaces everywhere, i'd imagine they're not cheap though.

Okay thanks

To be honest I expected that the MINI would probably have to live back at my parents house anyway

Not really wanting to move to a house on the outskirts just so I can bring it along!

I agree with that! wink

I'd rent a room in a house in North Manchester and commute it to be honest. Find a house with a few 'like minded' sorts.

Have a look at Rishton or Great Harwood, not bad places at all.
