Lived in Ramsbottom for a bit. It was great, the commute into Manchester town at the time was about 30 minutes (2005) and involved some back street rat runs as you get closer to the town center.

Bit of an pain if you wanted some beers in town on a Friday or Saturday night, but it was achievable. Bury might be a better option due to tram links etc.

Personally, if i had a choice, eventually i will be purchasing a house probably out towards that way - a bit quieter, bigger house, more space, long walks etc

Someone from Birmingham getting snotty about places to live in the North West.

Wow, just wow.
Well I live in Aldridge which is near Walsall its not great at all but still want to move somewhere nice.

Lived in Lincoln for 3 years at Uni in a lovely flat with a view of the waterfront then ocean village Southampton the year before its only my parents that live in an average area as they cant be bothered to move yet and prefer to go on about 5 holidays a year...

Either way Blackburn seems an utter st hole even compared to where I live hence the thread

take a visit to Accrington or Nelson when you move here, makes Blackburn seem positively peachy biggrin

This. I live in Blackburn and it's much the same as any Northern town: good in parts. I live right on the edge of the Borough with open farm land behind our house. Our road is a short cul de sac with no through traffic. There are a couple of reservoirs just up the road which are great for walking/cycling around. I have to admit that I do work in the town centre and that is a bit grim and I wouldn't recommend anyone to venture into town after dark looking for any kind of cosmopolitan night life.

I am sure they are some nice parts on the outskirts the view out my office window is lovely of the all the hills and reservoir etc... quite scenic.

However for a 22yr old single lad not really one for moving out in the countryside and with the down centre being a bit of a dump and lacking any form of night life it certainly is not the place for me!

It is either between Preston or moving south towards Manchester will need to take a look at both areas and see what I think smile

Preston gets my vote. I like rural and countryside but when I come to moving out chances are I won't be able to afford rural country so it'll likely be preston for me! or *shudders* Accrington.

Preston is practically the same as Blackburn, but with traffic. OP if you're so averse to area, why not work elsewhere?

I came to Preston for work in 1994. Still here...

The best thing about Preston is the ability to get to other places from it. Southern Lakes are 40 mins and it's not much longer to get to centres of Manchester or Liverpool. Trough of Bowland is reputed to be one of the Queen's favourite spots, it is beautiful and 25 mins tops from City Centre. You can drive to Glasgow in well under 3 hours and London is 2 hours 8 minutes on a Virgin Pendolino.

I rented on the docks when I was younger and single and its still within budget for the OP.

I now live in a rural detached house that would be £1 million plus in the South East - a price I could never afford. quality of life can in fact be pretty good, somewhat against the odds!

No - the best thing about Preston is the A59 because it gets you the fk outa there.

Preston is, in my experience, a grim, soul-less place.

If you live anywhere reasonably close to the centre - and that includes the "good" areas like Fulwood and Lea town - you will have a sink estate a stone's throw away.

Estates like Callon and Moor Nook are real stholes. The other (mainly housing association) estates are also pretty grim. Deepdale is depressing.

Traffic is horrendous, traffic links are good - fortunately. You really don't want to stay in Preston for long.

It's also a big university town (a small city actually). Nightlife is good, if that's your thing, as long as you like clubs with sticky carpets and midnight punch-ups with the "locals". It is quite a violent place.

That said, Blackpool is worse.

I don't think any of the other search sites have it but somethign I've been using a lot is the 'Commute time' method of defining a search area on Primelocation - http://www.primelocation.com/commute-time/?search-... - worth giving that a try as it can throw up some surprising ideas.

Doesn't take into account traffic (I don't think) but knock a bit off your max commute time & see what it gives you.

Only moving for 6 months on a 24 month graduate scheme so change location every 6 months...

Still between Preston and somewhere North of Manchester in the Bolton ish area. Bolton seems incredibly cheap rental wise £450 gets you something nice whereas more like £600 in Preston as its only for 6 months its working out what seems the best value.

Gather that to be honest though when its 6 months not sure why I am paying out loads on rent just for myself. Everywhere seems to be be average at best so I may as well just live somewhere cheap and slightly st for 6 months...

Preston does sound okay to me and then others say it's st but going to be another £150 a month compared to an equiv flat in Bolton which is near enough £2k over my 6 months. Being 22 £2k could buy me a lot of beer...

Clitheroe is a good call, 30 mins commute and a nice place, lots of pubs & bars. If manchester direction is your preference then Bury would be my call, you could probably find somewhere within walking distance of the tram into Manchester. At the same time still just 30 mins to blackburn.
