Okay thanks

To be honest I expected that the MINI would probably have to live back at my parents house anyway

Not really wanting to move to a house on the outskirts just so I can bring it along!

Someone from Birmingham getting snotty about places to live in the North West.

Wow, just wow.
Well I live in Aldridge which is near Walsall its not great at all but still want to move somewhere nice.

Lived in Lincoln for 3 years at Uni in a lovely flat with a view of the waterfront then ocean village Southampton the year before its only my parents that live in an average area as they cant be bothered to move yet and prefer to go on about 5 holidays a year...

Either way Blackburn seems an utter st hole even compared to where I live hence the thread

This. I live in Blackburn and it's much the same as any Northern town: good in parts. I live right on the edge of the Borough with open farm land behind our house. Our road is a short cul de sac with no through traffic. There are a couple of reservoirs just up the road which are great for walking/cycling around. I have to admit that I do work in the town centre and that is a bit grim and I wouldn't recommend anyone to venture into town after dark looking for any kind of cosmopolitan night life.
I am sure they are some nice parts on the outskirts the view out my office window is lovely of the all the hills and reservoir etc... quite scenic.

However for a 22yr old single lad not really one for moving out in the countryside and with the down centre being a bit of a dump and lacking any form of night life it certainly is not the place for me!

It is either between Preston or moving south towards Manchester will need to take a look at both areas and see what I think smile

Preston is practically the same as Blackburn, but with traffic. OP if you're so averse to area, why not work elsewhere?
Only moving for 6 months on a 24 month graduate scheme so change location every 6 months...

Still between Preston and somewhere North of Manchester in the Bolton ish area. Bolton seems incredibly cheap rental wise £450 gets you something nice whereas more like £600 in Preston as its only for 6 months its working out what seems the best value.

Bolton is cheap for a reason wink
Gather that to be honest though when its 6 months not sure why I am paying out loads on rent just for myself. Everywhere seems to be be average at best so I may as well just live somewhere cheap and slightly st for 6 months...

Preston does sound okay to me and then others say it's st but going to be another £150 a month compared to an equiv flat in Bolton which is near enough £2k over my 6 months. Being 22 £2k could buy me a lot of beer...

Moving the end of Feb so looking at properties in a couple of weeks!

Had a thought of moving to Salford Quays but the thought of commuting to and from Manchester put me off in the end despite me always liking the idea of living there.

Think its either Bolton or Preston or a village inbetween Blackburn and Manchester need to have a drive around really and see what I think.

What is the area like around this property?

http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-to-rent/proper...

As it is very cheap and appears to be okay inside

Commute could be ok since most of the the traffic will be going in the opposite direction to you. It may be quicker to drive north towards Ramsbottom, to get on the A56, because that inviting junction south of the pin can be busy. From driving around there, knowing someone that works in the area, Walmersley seems ok. Bury is likely a paradise compared to Preston and Blackburn.
I'd agree with Graphene, not a bad area, within walking distance of Bury town centre, tram into Manchester is less than half an hour.

To Blackburn, get on the A56, over the Grane Road and you're there, 30 - 40 mins, depending on what time you leave.

Plus there's a quality Chinese take away a few hundred yards away up Warmsley Road (Mans 2000)
Okay thanks for that it seems promising then!

Up in Blackburn next week so will arrange a viewing then and see what I think. Found out today I may not yet have to move as may be able to work Mon and Fri in Birmingham where I live and just pop up to Blackburn Tuesday to Thursday which would be ideal if not this flat seems a very good price and just what I need.

If you want a nicer area, easy access to Manchester (buses, trams), but still retaining a decently-timed commute, then Prestwich/Heaton-Park is not far away from the M66. Advantage is that you can join the M66 directly via M60/Heaton Park. More expensive rent, I expect.
Okay thanks

That flat is now off the market anyway as could not get a viewing

I am considering a flatshare at the moment as well at around £400 all in as it would save me about £300 per month which could go into to the E46 M3/House Deposit fund...

Liverpool.

45 miles away (bang on 1 hour), and meets each criteria you've requested.
Is that an hour with traffic though?

I normally work about 8:30 - 4:45

Dont want pretty countryside though I am 22 I want trendy bars and clubs nearby where I can get battered on the weekend...

Liverpool does indeed sound tad far looking at Preston house share someone ny age 400pm may be good.

Also considering manchester as only 40 min train ride so could dump my car at station and walk flat in about an hour if find somewhere near station...

Coming up north, looking to get battered - be careful what you wish for young man.
Live in Birmingham so used to being in a nightclub with some erm uncivilised characters...

Quite lucky in fact nobody has ever swung for me although that may be to do with the fact I am 6 foot 3 and about 16 stone its getting stabbed that is always my worry in this modern culture but not much you can do about it I suppose frown

Anyway off topic got a viewing in Preston and a viewing in Liverpool going to drive after work in Blackburn to Liverpool to get an idea whether the commute would kill me or not. Currently my commute takes me anywhere from 45 mins up to 1hr 30 and I find that manageable so if it falls within that range I may go for Liverpool as found a great flat share and also have a lot of friends in the area.

If not Preston seems a good backup!

If you're thinking of Liverpool city centre, then the commute on week days is going to edge close to 1.5 hours, the M58/M6 junction has roadworks at the moment so could even push a bit over that. If your prepared to do 1.5 hours you could almost stretch to Leeds, the train ride is lovely, all t'hills and stuff.
Leeds is another 15 miles away and don't know many people there to be honest it is a lovely place however!

I work flexible time so could probably do 7:00 - 4:00 or something if needs be to beat the traffic as on paper Liverpool is only an hour so sure early in the morning as you say 1hr 20ish should be achievable. Sounds weird but I quite like a decent length drive into work I find it calms me a bit before the day ahead unless it was like yesterday where it took me 2 hours to do 18 miles...
