I am not the first and wont be the last but I have decided to change career paths and become a mechanic. For the last 2 and a half years I have been studying Materials Science and Engineering at the university of Manchester, but I have hated every second of it and have finally worked up the courage to start a fresh.
I am looking for an experienced mechanic who would accept an apprentice in the Manchester Area, I much prefer the idea of working for an independent garage where the rewards of your labour are more visible. I am Applying for courses in the area that are only part time which would give a chance to work full time for the duration of my studies (2 Years). I am not looking for funding just the chance to get on the job training and experience. It maybe arrogant but I feel my Age and current level of qualifications sets me apart from other aspiring apprentices but it hasn't made it any easier to find work. My questions are this...
1. In your opinion what is the best way to get into the automotive industry as a mechanic?
2. What could I do to improve my chances of Getting a placement as an apprentice?
3. If I walked into your garage with a fresh cup of coffee and a sheet of questions would you give me 5 minutes of your time?
4. Anyone know anyone who is looking for wrench holder, bolt sorter, kettle boiler and mop handler?

Any help or advice is greatly appreciated and will be rewarded with a special mention in my 5 year update.

If im being honest id say don't do it - its a crap job. No matter how interested in cars etc you are its still a crap job with crap money for the run of the mill spanner wanger. Although you can earn good cash in Dubai and the like so im told. The only plus about it is I don't have to pay someone to fix my car. Im glad I got out.

If you want to do something along those lines why not try trains harder to get into but you can earn a lot lot more money.

If your hell bent on cars just get yourself around the garages and ask simple as that. Even if you offer your services for free on a Sat morning etc at least your showing willing. Or depending on where you are try Bentley they do a pretty good apprentice program from what I hear probably about the right time to look into that.
