We've been looking for a new area to live in. The general requirement is south manchester / cheshire, decent bit of green nearby, not too urban, but also some decent nightlife not too far away, easy travel links, and... (don't give me any st about this!) no/minimal chavs. We'd been looking at Lymm, Altrincham, Hale, Bowdon... but Mrs 2CV has introduced the possibility of Macclesfield. I don't know much about it, but have heard mixed reports.

Any ideas, thoughts please?

thanks

Wilmslow - proper town , bars, restaurants, super markets, active high street and lots of park land.

Ferrari, Aston Martin, Jaguar and Porsche dealerships.

7 miles or so from Macc, the foot of the Peak District.

Some parts of Macclesfield are really nice, the outskirts heading into the peaks, and the North side heading into Prestbury etc. South side can be a bit run down.

I presume you work in Manchester (City Centre)?

The southern parts of Warrington, like Daresbury, are pretty nice.

Runway runs east to west (and west to east) so very little of Wilmslow has any plane noise

Knutsford, Mobberley Heald Green, Cheadle etc

Are on the flight paths....

If you can venture a bit further, Chester. Great town, the only place that could drag me back up to the NW.

yea i ruled those out on that basis smile shame cos mobberley is lovely place, if a little isolated.

Managed to offend a guy I used to work with some years ago by saying i'd never choose those areas because of the planes. He couldn't understand why someone wouldn't just suck it up and get used to it. I think many people that are brought up around this way probably feel the same... not me though.

sure it's a nice place. Some of Mrs 2CV's friends are from there though, and it seems part of the deal of living there seems to be that they are obliged to harp on about how amazing it is, so that kind of puts me off a bit.

looked at those areas of warrington in depth a few years ago and whilst they are popular, I don't think they were really for me. Good shouts on the others though!

I would not recommend Maccesfield, but Tytherington, Bollington, Alderly Edge and Poyton (where I live) are all nice places.

I used to live in Wilmslow, but too maybe people trying to be someone over there.

IMO where you have to go to work is the most important factor.

I'm Manchester based now, but originally from NE Wales, born and schooled in Chester. I find western Cheshire far more pleasant than the east, as it's generally a bit quieter and more rural, but Chester/Cheshire Oaks/etc is still accessible for merriment etc. But as I said originally work location would dictate for me.

In Manc city centre every day at the mo, but that may change in Feb. Reasonably likely to be working away, so there probs won't be a commute as such from home.

Cheshire countryside and commute to Crewe. Train to Manchester. It is a different pace of life and I wished I had done it 20 years ago.

I live just outside Northwich. The town centre has zero going for it right now, but there's a lot of money being pumped in to it. We get the train to Knutsford if we fancy a bit of nightlife, or there are plenty of "gastro" style pubs thereabouts. Take a look at Plumley (it's ok, I don't live there, so won't be stalking you hehe )

Agreed Northwich coming on but Hartford is nice though isnt it.I live in Warmingham which is nice but quiet & nothing but a pub there. Sandbach is close by which has a lot of nice areas especially Elworth which also has the train station with the Crewe to Manchester line.Holmes Chapel is well worth a look as well as surrounding areas like Goostrey and the Peovers, lower, over & inferior.

Plumley is directly under the landing flight path when the wind is coming from the east. It's very very noisy. OK when the wind is from the west though.

Allostock or Cranage would be a better bet.
